I want a 3-peat! Who's with me?
All 5 of our starters plus Pritchard, Hauser and Tillman are signed for 2 (or more) seasons. Al said he wants to play into his 40's so he could have enough gas left in the tank for this season plus 1 more.
3-peat..let's do it!
No team has had a 3-peat since the Lakers (2000-2002) and the only other times it's been done were bulls (2x in the 90's) and Celtics (8 in a row in the 50's/60's)..so it would be so cool if we could pull it off in this day and age, with the NBA pushing so hard for parity.

Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything

Oh, come on, Hal. Once PP and AH are done/sprung free, the C's will have JD and their new Al (Watson) ready to fill the gap. Why not go for the octopeat?

Re: Celtics 2024-25, Season Thread
With Sam signed as the 14th roster player, spotrac projects the 2024-25 luxury bill at $65.6 million. Which is perfectly defensible for a title contending team, the problem comes for 2025-26 when the tax bill already is projected over $200 million with 11 guys signed.
But basically $65 million lux tax is a punt considering a deep playoff run, like a Finals run, will generate $40-$70 million in extra arena revenue. And winning rings adds to the value of the team and we’re in it for the rings, baby, lol!

Re: Celtics 2024-25, Season Thread
A 3-peat is very doable.
I believe 2025 will be the highest chance of the Cs winning a chip.
It will be in 2026 where it gets tricky because Al might retire and the Cs ownership might break up the core because of the tax.

Seven guys are signed until 2028 (next four seasons) -- Tatum, Brown, White, Holiday (PO in 4th yr), Hauser, Pritchard, Scheierman. Stevens needs to find the next impactful big(s) after Porzingis and Horford to keep this train going.

If it's down to choosing between KP and Jrue, I choose KP.
Jrue will be 36 by June 2026.
KP is a game changer.

Yep. The Cs are overall still profitable (after all expenses) with a tax bill under 100 million. With new TV contract and another deep playoff run maybe even they can stomach a little more, but 200 million plus? I can see them handling that for a season, but not much more.

The profit comes from the appreciation of the team asset, not from operating income.

Well that’s not profit. It’s unrealized until you sell. But yeah appreciation is a benefit and likely one of the big reasons you would want to own a franchise like the Celtics.

But that's what it is. I am tired of people claiming "Oh, no--they can spend more than they take in in income!" when for a winning team that is a great investment. Track the value of the Warriors when they started winning. Very much like most tech startups that can, yes, "profitably", operate at a loss for years.

uThe Celtics are a win now team. Our top 10 rotation players are experienced and ready to win now.
Tatum
Brown
White
Holiday
Horford
Porzingas
Pritchard
Hauser
Kornet
Tillman
Luke, Tillman and Sam are on veteran minimum deals for this season. Unfortunately, the 4 guys at the end of the roster are just as costly but not necessarily reliable. The rest of our roster could be jettisoned and we could just sign any 5 veteran guys like Svi and Brissett and we might even get better.
Of the back of the bench group, Queta is the guy we hope can make a leap this year. He can be very productive in terms of points and rebounds and if he can be consistent defensively he would be a guy not so easy to replace. Springer is pretty expensive at 4 million to just ride the pine. He has to step up and give what Brissett used to give the team. His youth and athleticism and defensive potential make him an exciting prospect but the team needs him to deliver this season. If not, I think he should be traded away and I expect that he will to be honest.
Walsh, Scheierman and Watson are fine for 2 ways and end of bench guys who will spend season in Maine with JD and Drew but I would trade any one of them for a vet ready to help right away immediately if I could. It’s not that I don’t like them - I actually do - it’s just a matter of where this team is right now.
If the new CBA makes it possible for the Bucks to get Gary Trent on a minimum deal, Brad should be searching for unsigned vets willing to do the same.

"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

Re: Celtics 2024-25, Season Thread
I don't think Gary Trent is going to help this particular team as much as the Bucks. We were +21.2 on offense with both Brown and Tatum sitting, +8.4 when Brown plays and Tatum sits, and +15.3 when Tatum plays and Brown sits. We don't need firepower off the bench. We just need Jaylen Brown to be less destructive to team offense, which isn't going to be helped by getting a 2nd tunnel-vision me first guy.

Eric Weiss made a good point that was similar to what I made here a few weeks back - the operating losses are valuable as tax offsets, the extra point he made is that would cover the cost of potential debt they incur on a short term basis, and get re-paid upon the sale.
With the team appreciating 10x already before the title, that's not technically profit but some of these costs pay for themselves as the value of the team goes up.
