Re: Around the League - Beasley Boogies to Detroit
How bad is the nba players union with negotiating for the role players? Free agency is either a Max deal, mid level exception, or min deal in order to get that mid level the next year. Especially since they suddenly created these aprons and all the penalties... didn't they think it through before just agreeing to this? Contracts are going to only go to stars and scraps will be left for everyone else. I just want to see that one deal where a team gives a myles plumlee 52 mil over 4 years!

Same thing happens to a more extreme level in MLB.

Re: Around the League - Beasley Boogies to Detroit
I think the players union did largely fine.
If the number 1 goal for the league was to increase parity and cutdown on big market spending, this is just a consequence of that. Teams will always pay their stars first.
We’ll probably see a lag effect for this to impact higher salary deals, but it will probably come in some form. I’m thinking more teams will wait on their young guys, like Houston this year, than shell out a rookie max moving forward. The cost of having a bad contract will be more severely felt.

Re: Around the League - Beasley Boogies to Detroit
Kinda curious how the league would respond to more defections to Europe as the talent pool gets wider. Maybe they wouldn’t care, because they’re still the top league, but I have to imagine they’d implement something.
Seems like the league would either have to lower the max contract which I don’t really think would be on the table, or add more spots in the league by expanding. The latter seems inevitable, but I’m kinda wondering if they should expand past 32.
I think another option would be more heavily investing in the g-league, so that those contracts are competitive with a minimum nba salary.

Why would that be the #1 goal of the players union?

This doesn't reflect the reality of this free agency period.

Yeah the NBAs system is better for the middle class type player than any other CBA in pro sports.

I said the league’s number 1 goal.
The best way to do that would probably be through implementing a hard cap, but a second apron that’s more punitive seems like a good compromise between the league and player’s union.

Re: Around the League - Beasley Boogies to Detroit
The players union wants to 1) grow the players' share of BRI, 2) increase total BRI (therefore increasing the total of the player share), and, significantly farther down the line, 3) increase player choice.
They have no direct control over how teams choose to allocate their money and never will, and there is nothing about the current structure that suggests any particular group or salary range will be 'squeezed', despite media hype that teams are getting hesitant about the max (because of Brandon Ingram) or that the middle class was cut out of the deal (because Trent chose to take the min after turning down larger offers).
One thing that is not often reported about the new CBA is that, in addition to more punishments for going way *above* the cap, there are also more substantial disincentives for coming in way *below* the cap.

Re: Around the League - Beasley Boogies to Detroit
The NBA Players Union is the most powerful in all the major sports, but it's because of the nature of said sport as opposed to anything they've strategically negotiated. Like, I guess you can kinda give credit to the superstar tier guys of the last 10-15 years for understanding their worth and how they're the main drivers of franchise/league revenue, but they're essentially no different than owners at this point with the kind of money that's getting thrown around.
The top players are 100% out to enrich themselves and I can't eye-roll hard enough whenever we hear the dumb PR talk about "fighting for the little guys" as if CJ McCollum and Lebron give a single **** about making sure dudes like De'Anthony Melton are getting their fair share of the revenue pie.

Thinking expanding to Europe... Maybe create 2 more Regions"
1. East
2. West
3. Europe
4. G League
The East or West Champ that had the best regular season record plays with the GLeague Champ. Other faces the EuroLeague Champ and proceed with the Finals. Something like that would be great for actually to become "World Champion".
I think eventually NBA should take over and conquer the World of Basketball ... It can be done without teams traveling over the atlantic ... just create a separate region

Re: Around the League - Beasley Boogies to Detroit
Having listened to Domonique Foxworth talk about the NBA PA over the years it's clear that the stars of the league are closer to management than they are with the middle and lower rungs of the players. He's given examples of being in The Room and negotiating with the interests of the entire PA in mind, and LeBron straight up shouting him down.

I haven't watched a full Team USA game yet but in the maybe 50 total minutes of game clock I've watched I don't think I've seen Embiid run yet?

When none of the players end up making the slightest dent in the NBA is it still scouting, player development, and coaching excellence?

The NBA is a distant second to the MLB. I’ve spent lifetime watching the MLB players union roll over management right and left. Years of trying to implement a salary scale, hard cap, soft cap, etc. The owners always lose. And if it ever looks like they might win on something, the union takes them to court to reverse it.

Huh? GG Jackson dropped 44 points in an nba game last year and he’s younger than AJ Johnson by two weeks. Practically the same squad that put a beatdown on the bucks last year. Grizzlies swept us last year without Ja, Bane, Smart, or Adams.
Ware might be starting for the Heat this year and if not he will be getting heavy rotation minutes. At this point I’ve gotten used to Miami picking up free agents off the street that practically outplay anyone on our team not named Giannis in the playoffs

MLB barely has revenue sharing and their books are still closed. I don't think the victories for the MLBPA are as large as you think. MLB owners are idiots because they collude constantly and openly which is against anti-trust laws, and causes lawsuit losses.
However, NY, Boston and LAD are printing money and probably putting 20% back into their teams.

Dude, the 80s and 90s were long time ago. The MLBPA has been getting destroyed for a long time now.
