Truly heartbreaking to see the pictures and what's happening out there.

If anyone has any idea the best way to donate, please share and I'll add to the OP.

The Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta will match every dollar donated by Canadians to the Canadian Red Cross 2024 Alberta Fires Appeal. This means that every $1 donated will become $3 to support those affected by the wildfires. Eligible donations already received will be matched. Donations to the Canadian Red Cross will be used for assisting those impacted in Jasper and other affected areas in Alberta with immediate and ongoing relief including financial assistance, support to evacuees and the communities hosting them, recovery and resilience efforts in response to the wildfires, as well as supporting community preparedness and risk reduction for future all-hazard disaster events within Alberta.

Jasper, Alberta has a wall of flames (100s of metres high) going through the city and burning up everything.

Nothing has been set-up but usually Unicef and Canadian Red Cross handles disasters.

yes, agreed. I had a vacation planning to go to Jasper in about 2 weeks and devastated that people who call it home are watching it be destroyed.

you could say that massive budget cuts was playing with fire, when there is certainly a need to have more adequate systems to mitigate future forest fires.

Horrible. I haven't been there in about 15 years, but love that place so much. Always preferred it to Banff.

The devastation to the park and homes and businesses is going to happen. I just hope no one gets hurt or killed in the process.

I'm sure they'll setup something soon, esp once the extent of the damage to the town is known. Hoping for the safety of everyone there, and another reminder of just how brave those firefighters are.

Thankfully they evacuated all the residents a few days ago. As the mayor says, they can always rebuild the buildings.

Yeah, Banff is a crowded, commercialized, expensive tourist trap. Lake Louise isn't much of a town at all, but it gives you a better sense of the vibe that Jasper has - or used to have.

Went to Jasper when I proposed to my wife at Lake Moraine. The drive there and the area was breathtaking. It's heartbreaking to see this. I have a couple of hoodies that I still wear that say Jasper on it

Has the West Coast always been a wildfire ****show? I only went to the West Coast for the first time this year and it's so beautiful. But between Fort McMurray and now Jasper and everything in between, it feels like we're hearing about wildfires every summer like clockwork.

I thought the West Coast air felt great, but it can't be with all this going on.

I am in Saskatchewan like 10 hours away from the fires, and there has been a smokey haze here for days, some days worse depending on wind

Hearing about these fires worsening every year for a while now, I have to wonder what preventative measures the governments are taking, if any, because that's rarely in the news and this is a serious problem.

It’s smoggy AF here literally every summer nowdays. It definitely never used to be this bad.

Not much you can do in the way of preventative measures. Most of the serious fire this year were caused by lightning strikes. It’s the heat, the drought and the vastness of the forest. Over 400 fires burning in BC right now,not to mention another 150 or so in Alberta

Whoever called the evacuation order on monday night should be lauded as a hero.

Instead, the province were trying to scale back on that "miscommunication" order - which ended up being the right call all along.

The wild fires happening in Jasper, across the country and globally are heartbreaking. The effects of global warming on the world are absolutely devastating.

Yeah, I'm originally from Calgary, and even since coming to Toronto decades ago have gone back regularly and do the spectacular drive from Calgary to Vancouver, especially now to show my kids. But when we did it in 2021, you could see a smoky film everywhere around Banff. The mountains didn't look nearly as nice through the haze. And throughout the interior and into the Okanagan, small wildfires everywhere. On the way back, we stopped at Radium for the night, and there was a thin layer of ash on the car in the morning. Then driving the back road to Banff, it was mile after mile of burnt out forest. Heartbreaking.

And I'm just reading that they're evacuating Golden. Golden! These town names may not mean much to many of you, but they are beautiful and iconic.

Indigenous people used to have a practice where they burned the underbrush of forests. Then Smokey the Bear happened.
