Make it work: Blazers/Lakers

Post#1 » by Tim Lehrbach » Thu Jul 25, 2024 11:13 pm

The Lakers need more good players, and the Blazers have some decent players they don't need.

There have been a lot of proposals between the Blazers and Lakers both on this board and the Blazers board, but most of them assume the Lakers will cough up a distant first round pick for Grant while also sacrificing the rotation players needed to match salaries. I think the Lakers need more to shake a pick loose. Portland has additional, expendable players who'd help LA's rotation. I can't figure out how to make the salaries work without gutting LA. Portland will not ascend back above the tax line, and LA cannot aggregate salaries while returning so much money as to put them over the second apron (if I'm understanding the CBA correctly).

Challenge: get any combination of Jerami Grant, Deandre Ayton, Matisse Thybulle, Anfernee Simons, and/or Robert Williams III (must be at least two of the five) to Los Angeles for any incoming salaries plus a future, light-to-medium-protected first rounder in a deal both sides* would accept. Portland can throw in second rounders, but I don't think these typically do much to balance a trade.

Can it be done?

I think a deal could be made, just not sure who is being more unrealistic, Cronin or Pelinka?

The best combination is Grant & Williams, as Williams (if healthy) could help fill a need at C for the Lakers

Grant\Williams\Banton (or Walker)
for
Rui\Vincent\Dlo a 30’ 1st and preferably (2) pick swaps (29’ & 31’), top 3\5 protected

Why for LAL?

They get (2) solid vets at positions of need and only truly give up (1) 1st

Pick swaps allow LAL to still retain their 1st, but POR gets a chance to switch with LAL, if their pick is better. Also, LAL is protected against disaster (top 3 or top 5) if they bottom out one of those years, also a decent chance that one of those swaps will never be used by POR or be of negligible value.

Also allows LAL the ability to trade 29’/31’ in a potential future deal if need be

Retain younger players like JHS, & Knecht

Banton could be waived, only $200k guaranteed? For more cap savings

LAL take less $ back in this deal

Why for POR?

Grab a 1st and (2) pick swaps

Rui can fill in for Grant, may be dealt later, not sure if he has great value but his contract is much more palatable under the new CBA

Dlo, maybe could be dealt at mid-season for minor return? Even if not, POR clears a significant portion of Grant’s salary off the books, next offseason by letting him walk.

Vincent only has 2yrs on his deal left

Basically:
Grant for a 1st + Rui
Williams for (2) protected pick swaps

I like Grant/Williams to LA but that's too much outgoing salary. So next best option is:

Grant/Reath for Rui/Vincent/JHS/2026 FRP

Throw in a few seconds too or maybe a swap.

Actually, I think LA saves money in this deal and POR stills stays out of the tax.

I can't see any scenario in which the Lakers would be willing to give up an unprotected pick for any of the Blazers' players. That's not to say that the Blazers player aren't very good, but teams don't trade unprotected picks for non-stars. And calling anyone the OP is offering a star is a stretch. A lightly protected pick plus a pick swap is probably the maximum the Lakers would be willing to go.

30’ pick from LAL could have some light (top3/5) protections on it as well, rolling into another year or turning into multiple 2nd’s

That's gonna be way too much money coming back to LA, and completely destroys the Lakers depth. After that deal, the Lakers' backcourt currently consists of Banton, Reaves, Christie, and Bronny. That's simply can't work.

Lakers actually save $2.3m in this deal, $4.3 if they waive Banton (only $217k guaranteed). Which means they could use a portion of their MLE to sign a player.

I should have finished my train of thought. The Lakers can't afford to have that kind of immoveable salary on their books. Robert Williams makes too much for a guy who has played in 41 games over the last 2 seasons.

I could consider this, feels like a no brainer for Portland (even though that pick is loto protected until 27 and then becomes a 2nd in 2028)

But a few issues

1) Is Lavine healthy enough and is he going to be the same guy? If he is the guy from a few years back or close enough, makes a lot of sense

2) Is Reath good enough defensively to be the backup C or just a big you put next to AD? He is only 6'9, worries me a bit

3) Can we get a wing who has a more reliable 3 point shot and still keep Vando with the salaries of JHS, 1 of Cam, Wood, Hayes, and Maxwell Lewis if needed/possible? So someone around 6.5-8.5m. Still have our 1sts to move as well

Dean Wade, Tari Eason. Any chance Pacers move Neismith?

If we could get one of those guys and say sign Fultz or Tyus Jones

Lavine, Reaves, Vando, Bron, AD
Jones/Fultz, Christie, Knecht, Wade/Eason/Neismith, Reath

Not bad...

Could send Reddish to Portland, take in Craig instead. Or Blazers send Toumani or Banton to Lakers.

Lakers get LaVine, Reath, Craig/Toumani/Banton

Blazers get Reddish, POR25FRP

Bulls get DLo, Rui, Vincent

Locally, this doesn't make sense. This is effectively LaVine and PDX FRP for D'Angelo, Rui, Vincent, and Reddish. But they're re-routing Reddish to PDX. For Portland's willingness to accept Reddish, they're being rewarded with a FRP? I find it really hard to believe that THJ took 3 SRPs to salary dump, but Reddish costs a FRP at a fraction of the price that THJ was.

It's not an FRP that is expected to convey, it's really 2 SRPs.

And it's not a dump of Reddish, it's to acquire Reath

Yeah nobody understands how Dallas pulled that off so cheaply--especially after Detroit had invested a good 2nd in Grimes already. :D

But Reath definitely isn't worth that pick more than Reddish. It's protections run a long time meaning good chance its actually a first at some point and if not, 2 2nds is probably an overpay--though offset I guess by how long you wait for it.

But would make more sense for LA to take the first and send some other 2nd or two to Portland. Reath simply isn't worth any kind of shot at a first.

Zero chance Portland does this with Toumani. I wouldn’t do it with Reath + Banton either, but maybe the organization considers it.

I think non-Portland fans may be unaware that Toumani is our best perimeter defender. He is significantly more valuable than Reath, yet is seemingly being viewed as filler as part of a Reath trade.
