I feel like all of these guys are in the top 25. Although Giannis still might be top 30 with his most recent injury history IMO

KG ... Is an all time favourite among many of us here on realgm ... Is he a top 25 player? I say Yes
15-20 range

Malone ... Not many are fans of him due to (off court history plz stay away) but he Is around the 18-25 range

Dirk ... Is around the 20-25 rank range

Barkley ... While I love Barkley his more around the 30-40 range

Giannis ... His still playing and It's hard to tell where he'll end up, atm no way his a top 25 all time, maybe In today's game but not all time ... I'd place him between 50-75 range atm ... The top 75 range Is a tough list

If you would list an all time best starting 5 (PG,SG,SF,PF, C) you would put KG in?

Magic (curry Is close), MJ, Bird (not Bron not for me), Duncan, Shaq ... It's my realgm goat thread :) Although Shaq not on the poll LOL

Is he though? He was a great one one side of the court and the worst of this group on D. Also is against Giannis and 3 three giants of sustained impact and he trailed off not long after 30. They are all in the top half of the all time 75 and someone has to be last.

1. Karl Malone - Consistently great leader and scorer, decent enough defender to help make the Jazz defense as good as it was.
2. Barkley - Great player. Not known well for defense, but made up for it with his rebounding.
3. Dirk - Not the best defender but did alright there, and made up for it with his offense. Outside shooting and foot work inside.
4. Garnett - One of the best defenders ever, and decent star level scorer. Didnt consistently step up in big playoff moments.
5. Giannis - Great player, but still early to put him ahead of any of the others. We'll see what happens next.

Dirk...athletic? Over Malone? Or Chuck?

No idea your age. And Dirk played until he couldn't move at all due to his injuries. But Dirk in his 20's? Super athletic. Go watch highlights. Reason he played SF initially. And he was grabbing rebounds and taking it full court and yamming it on guys on the regular.

Old man Dirk settled into a skill game, but make no mistake this was an athlete. Not comparing him to Chuck or Mailman as their athleticism is so different. But he was a very good athlete for a 7 footer.

White guys can be athletic too.

Yeah he was the original unicorn…
Dude had some unstoppable moves. I remember him as being a + athlete when he first came in.

Yeah, but... since when does being athletic mean you aren't a power forward? And who here thinks Malone and Barkley weren't amazing athletes?

Just a strange series of comments.

Huh? I never said Dirk wasn't a PF. I never said Chuck and Mailman weren't athletes.

Strange to respond to a post I didn't make. :D

Duncan, his not on the list... But many people here on realgm and actual players/gms etc all place Duncan In their top 10 If not top 5.

I guess this why Op didn't include Duncan ;)

Or he correctly didn't want to put a center in the list.

Garnett

LMAO KG top 25 but Giannis 50-75? Giannis did what KG could NEVER do which is take a small market team to the promised land and win it all. KG bounced to a super team and only won 1 when his team was stacked

Interesting to see how players' rankings change over time... even after they stop playing.

Karl Malone would have been the consensus #1 on this list even fairly recently. Few people would have had Dirk Nowitzki even at #2.

But rings matter more than ever for many (and how they are perceived to have been won). Recency bias helps. And off-court stuff obviously impacts things, too.

On my all-time ranking:

9. KG
17. Dirk
24. Malone
25. Giannis
28. Barkley

I expect Giannis to climb this list and get Malone. I'd be surprised if he caught Dirk or KG for me, but I still think it's possible.

Karl Malone I guess.

gailgoodrich wrote:Having watched a whole lot of every single one of these guys, I think Giannis has already peaked highest. His Finals performance after hurting the knee was one of the really special stretches in NBA history. He absolutely dominated on both ends in a way nobody else on this list could come close to -- Barkley, Malone, and Dirk could do it on offense, KG could do it on defense, but none did anything like Giannis on both sides of the basketball.

That said, Giannis has had some rough luck with his own health and especially Middleton's. Middleton's decline lead to the big swing for Lillard, which in theory could still pan out, but is looking like a last gasp -- especially as Lopez ages out. That combination of factors I think has taken the shine off Giannis' reputation. But I believe he's the best player on this list and may want to force his way out of Milwaukee while he still has a chance at a winning final chapter.

Karl Malone was not much of a rim protector, although he would knock you down, he was one of the best defensive power forwards of his generation and definitely the most consistent. Nobody looked forward to playing Karl Malone. Unfortunately for Karl, his prime lined up with MJ's. And the same can be said of Barkley, he was a very athletic round mound and way above average on defense. These two players cannot be dismissed as offensive players only, no way. Because KG was an exceptional defender does not take anything away from other players who played both sides well.
