How is this a political issue? You want your kids to see dudes with their testicles out and women with beards?

You really think watching drags will turn kids into drags? If your kids ever become drags or queer after watching a drag show it's probably because they were wired that way from the start and felt liberated. One of my daughters love drag shows ever since she saw Conchita Wurtz win Eurovision ten years ago when she was 7. She's a huge fan of Nicky Doll and screamed and jumped when she saw her last night. She's 17 and and has grown to be a straight normal girl because that's who she is. Watching and following drag queens on socials didnt turn her into one. It blows my mind that people still dont understand that in 2024.

If you’re not American, you won’t understand just how much you are wasting your time arguing with people like that  They’re indoctrinated from birth to believe queerness is an infectious disease that the “woke liberal left” wants to spread to the world

Surfing is one of the most boring olympics sports for the layman imo. Lots of waiting just to see surfers fail or do some lame moves.

Go to McDonald's and eat some fries and burgers.

That's cool and all but what does that have to do with mocking an entire religion as was displayed?

Lets see them do that with Islam and see how it goes. I'm not even religious, not an ounce, but have some damn respect for others. The hypocrisy is hilarious. If that's what France is about, good thing the majority of us don't live there. We are good here, Mickey D and all.

Why is it mocking? The Last Supper has been replicated in countless movies/shows like the Sopranos, the Simpsons or South Park. It was intentionally mocked in some of those episodes. Why is it mocking in that instance and not in the others? My wife is very religious and Catholic and she liked it, she wasnt offended one bit. I think people's opinion on drags and the overal queer community has a lot of influence on how they felt about it.

Also it's ironic that you mention Islam when you're not even aware of recent history.

I never said it isn't mocking in other scenarios. Regardless of how your wife, you or I feels, it has sparked controversy. Therefor it was never a good idea to do so. I am pro celebration of whatever, just not at someone else's expense. And the fact that they went through it (at the Olympics of all stages) without thinking that it COULD be perceived as offensive is ridiculous. So much fail here.

I understand that the current line of commentary is stemming from the Opening Ceremony, and I was hoping the discussion would kinda dissipate on its own, but it's not and we have people in the other Olympic thread openly lamenting that they'd like to discuss sports here but are confused about why this thread is no longer about that. Instead the thread is about LGBT and drag queens and "radical fanatics." That's not what we're going for here.

If you'd like to discuss religion/culture/politics you are always welcome to do so on the Current Affairs board. We try to be consistent with not allowing much of that on the GB. viewforum.php?f=69

I'm also seeing comments that are just overly hostile and/or straight up personal attacks. Stuff like, "You cultureless american" and "Such softies. American republicans especially." Comments like that are a violation of posting guidelines and subject to strike/suspension.

Anyway, I'm going to stop rambling now but let's bring the current line of discussion to an end and get back to sports. Please and thank you!

No prob. I posted it at the very end of the last page so I'm kinda glad you quoted it. One more time for emphasis, everyone! Pretty please let's talk about sports here.

I kinda don't understand why there are a dozen sporting events happening at any given time yet NBC has just been talking to Michael Phelps for the last 2 hours instead of showing sports.

Yeah I've got it. It's just weird that the main NBC channel is doing so much yapping when they could be showing the actual Olympics.

They are off and on. When I first put the TV on this morning they were in studio talking to Phelps for ages. But since then they have showed some of the swimming events that are going on. I guess they're going for a mix of sports and blabbering/narratives/drama rather than just the hardcore sports aspect.

Women's 400m freestyle ended up Titmus Gold, McIntosh Silver, and Ledecky Bronze.

I am being drowned with fencing in the country I live. Understandable given a local girl is ranked no. 1 in the world, but damn. Having swimming was a nice change.

Are there sensitivities around other religious works that, had they been recreated/lampooned instead, would have been as safe to do so - in today's France? That's a lot of good points that work a big circle around the hub, which is that is IS a centrally religious symbolic piece of art. As you acknowledge. But there's also a reason France has banned all religious exterior symbols in schools (paraphrasing) and only one religion was lampooned, despite it being a country of many faiths, of course. Something is being ignored-to-minimized here, even as I support the right to blaspheme in general.

Are there famous non-religious works of art? Of course there are. Would recreating/paying homage to/lampooning a non-religious work of art showcase France's laïcité? No, it wouldn't.

Remember, the whole point of Olympic opening ceremonies (other than to officially indicate the start of the Games) is to showcase the host country's culture. Laïcité is a key component of French culture. Laïcité is the reason why the use of religious symbols in public places was banned. Laïcité is part of what makes France, well, France.

I realize that this could be seen as offensive to Americans (or people from other similarly religious countries) but France does have the right to showcase their culture during the opening ceremony they are hosting.

As I've stated before, France has strong representation of all the Abrahamic faiths.

France has strong representation of the Christian faith. About 50% of the population identifies as Christian. Around 5% identifies as Muslim. Only 1% are Jewish. So, to lump all of them together as Abrahamic faiths when Christianity represents around 90% of the adherents of Abrahamic faiths is a bit disingenuous.

France is a Christian-majority country so it is only natural that the religion that they're going to recreate/pay homage to/lampoon is going to be their majoritarian religion. That's what normally happens, everywhere around the world. Recreating/paying homage to/lampooning a minority religion would be the weird part.

I get what you're trying to imply here, G R E Y, but I fully disagree.

Rugby 7s is fun. It's just a shame that it was so early in the Olympic calendar that it's almost already over.
