Re: Official RJ Barrett Thread
If RJ keeps playing defense with this level of commitment and determination then he is definitely worth the contract.
2024/2025 averages will likely be around
22-5-4 on 48, 38, 75 shooting with good defense.
23 years old.
He just needed a change of scenery, and it was still a good trade for both teams.

He's already worth his contract... especially compared with recent big signings....arguably one of the top two players both on Raptors and Team Canada.

It looks likely that RJ Barret has become the best player in that trade. I wasn’t expecting that at all.

He was the highest rated player coming out of college. Sometimes I wonder if people think rj is 27 he’s still only 23 and he was a 3rd overall selection.
Everyone is drooling over chomche I can’t wait until he is also 23 and five years in for the crystal ball gang to show up and claim it’s been 5 years since we drafted him and he hasn’t improved enough. Why isn’t he Giannis as we foolishly told ourselves he was going to be.
RJ doing what he is doing is not very surprising.

You think so ? I think high volume 3 point shooting will always be more valuable than what RJ brings to the table at the moment.
Until he can guard his position, his best role on a contender would be being a 6th man imo.

I thought we were gonna get the RJ Barrett of the Knicks version but he’s actually been on a torture start since he’s played for the Raptors. He’s improved his 3 Pt% and eliminated his low efficient mid range game. RJ’s also one of the only players on the Raptors that draws fouls and gets to the free throw line.

It’s great but it still doesn’t really matter until he can guard his position. His offence was never the big issue on the Knicks. It was his lack of POA defence.
It’s why the Knicks went from a good team to borderline contenders with OG in place of RJ despite RJ being a more dynamic scorer.
If he can be like 80-90% of the offensive player he was last year for us while also becoming an average to above average defender ? Now that’s the best player in the trade. Until then, I’m not so sure with that statement.

Quickley's defence has not been very good as well nor can Quickley finish at the rim well enough. Overally I think Barrett's offence is above Quickley while Quickley's defence has been below average while Barrett's defence being a little bit worse than Quickley.

His point is that 3pt offence > 2pt offence. RJ has a bit more of a dynamic offensive game, but it's called the 3pt era for a reason.

Props TZ!

You are making up the bolded part. He was very inefficient with the Knicks, and it's part of why he was included with IQ

lol thank you. It seems people like to hold only certain players to unrealistic standards. I mean how many people on this board keep claiming RJs future is on the bench unless he learns to defend his own position
Every single player including MJ has a weak point that anyone can criticize if they truly want to be a troll enough.
Not every player is going to be Lebron or MJ. What you gonna do keep trading every player until you finally draft the first bionic player who is good at everything and shoots 100% from the field.
It’s sports there has never been a perfect player in any sport.

You still need slashers and a pg to penetrate, to open up the 3pt. You can't have 5 guys camping out.
RJ offense I'd above average, he is a scorer

Not really. Yeah his offence was an issue but the bigger issue was that he couldn’t defend his position.
That’s a no no, especially under Thibs.

IQ has a history of being a great team defender though. It’s why his +/- numbers obliterated RJ’s on the Knicks. It’s also much easier to hide your PG’s on defence.
RJ is a 6’8 wing who can’t guard wings or guards. That has a cascading effect because now we have to make Scottie the main wing defender which takes away from what he does best, being a help side defender. We don’t want Scottie to be the offensive hub and play the OG role on defence, that’s just not good optimization of his stamina and our team defence.
Just look around the contenders and playoff teams, your wings need to be able to defend at a high level. Period.

RJ is not a serious long term piece here. He'll play his contract out and move on.

His offence was absolutely a huge issue in NYK. He was horrifically inefficient.

Sure but his defence was a bigger issue.
Why do you think their starting line up became exponentially better when OG took RJ’s place? Because OG is all of a sudden a great offensive player? OG didn’t even average 15 points a night with them.
What they needed was someone who could defend at a high level and have shooting gravity from the 3. RJ does neither of that, even with all of his improvements that he’s made since joining our team. Hitting wide open 3’s is not same as having shooting gravity.

RJ was a high usage player scoring on 53% TS. OG is a low usage player scoring on 60% TS. OG is a much better fit for them on offence. RJ was just taking possessions away from more efficient scorers on the team.
Sure, OG being a better defender has helped them as well, but getting rid of a high volume, low efficiency chucker has made a huge difference.
