Guess the contract: Isaac Okoro
The Cavs have the space to sign him to a decent deal given room they have under 1st apron but I’m sure they don’t want to overpay given limited flexibility on open market.
What is right deal for him if others that have flexibility (exemption money or straight spend or cap room) are interested in signing him to offer sheet (Jazz?, Raptors? etc)

Re: Guess the contract: Isaac Okoro
i missed that his QO was almost $12M. He's fortunate to have that, because he definitely isn't making more than that, even if the market had more money out there.
change my $8-10M vote for the QO

Re: Guess the contract: Isaac Okoro
I think he’s probably worth similar money to Patrick Williams…more durable & tougher, less length & shooting…but at this point he’s not even getting his QO.

Think some team should have given him the MLE, or 3yr45.
Like Detroit specifically could have given him a front loaded 3-4 year deal starting around 16-17 and not cared…
At this point, probably the QO. Maybe Cleveland gives him a 12mil player option on year 2 and is happy if he opts in?

But is another tough nosed played that can’t shoot really what the pistons kids need?

Okoro can shoot though. He can’t create his shot, but he can shoot 40% from the corner and force defenses to stay on him.
And yeah, I think that’s what you want if you’re projecting 3-4 of Duren, Thompson, Holland, Ivey, Cade as your starters/part of your core over the next decade…
Low usage, impactful player..

Not on enough volume for teams to worry about leaving him open.

As he is a 39-40% corner three shooter and he’s only taking 1.5~ corner threes a game, as an outsider that either means it’s working and defenses aren’t coming off him, his team isn’t giving him the ball more, or he’s afraid to shoot it and passes up shots like Maxi?… (sorry fellow Dallas fans)
Don't know which one it is as I don’t watch enough Cleveland games. But given Garland/Mitchell play making ability, I think it’s probably the first one?

I'd say it's the latter leading to the 2nd. Didn't watch much of the Boston series, but we straight up ignored him defensively and Orlando didn't show him much respect either.

Utah still needs to spend some money, so they will throw a 14M offer sheet for him.

At this point it feels like his best option would be to sign the QO and try again next offseason

Okoro doesn't get the ball much, his touches per minute are really low and his points per touch have been close to the highest on the team.
He's perennially among the leaders of distance to nearest defender on 3-point attempts. He usually passes or drives if someone is closing him out rather than trying to shoot over the closeout. Whether that's good shot selection or lack of trust in his own shot is in the eye of the beholder.

Re: Guess the contract: Isaac Okoro
I'd throw him an offer and see if he bites.
Something like
13
12
Team option for 11
3 year 36 mil offer. He could bet on himself and take the QO instead. But, after seeing what happened to Gary Trent and Tyus Jones his agent might be inclined to push for getting the dollars available now and worry about later later.

"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

They are saving their capspace to renegotiate and extend Lauri after August 6th which is why they haven't even signed their draft picks yet. They won't have $14 mil to throw at Okoro.

I wouldn't even guarantee 2/$25 although maybe Cavs want the contract as a trade chip. No other team would pay him that kind of money although his expiring could be a trade filler piece next offseason. If he signs the QO it is basically a no trade clause for the player.

What about a Paul Reed contract on steroids?
13M year 1
14M year 2 (guaranteed if he makes the 2nd round)
15M year 3 (guaranteed if he makes the 2nd round)
Utah's not making the 2nd round in the next 2-3 years, so why not

Re: Guess the contract: Isaac Okoro
Looking at the market…Isaiah Joe, Obbi Toppin, Sam Hauser…seems like he has a similar impact I. General to these guys. He is a legit solid 3/D guy at only 24 next season. I’d be looking at offering a 4/45 type deal starting at 10 million next year. Yeah his QO is more so maybe he would just play for that.
His QO is right at his market value imo.
Good all around player with some upside but he really doesn’t project as a full time starter to me. 6th man type for sure. I think for him betting on himself and playing on the QO is not a terrible idea. Might be a better deal out there….but maybe not.

I'd be happy if Detroit signed Okoro. He'd become the third starter-level player (after Cade and Harris) who is not a prospect or bench guy pushed to start because of a lack of talent on the roster.
At the AAVs being bandied about (at his QO number or less), I'd happily offer Okoro 4yrs/$44M. Make it flat, maybe with a team option in the 4th year, and it becomes a good trade chip in a year or two.
