3-way trade... NY gets Lauri, Kessler, and a role-player from a 3rd team (HOU?)... NY sends out Randle, Mitch, Deuce, rights to Dadiet, rights to Kolek. Houston gets Randle, Collins (from UTA) and sends some draft assets and young players to Utah. UTA gets Mitch, Deuce, Dadiet, Kolek, and some young dudes from HOU.

I think the Knicks are keeping Kolek as backup point is a substantial need and Rokas just signed overseas.

I can't comment on Dadiet, lest I be labeled a conspiracy theorist.

Everyone wants to trade Randle, and I'm not saying there isn't a faction within the Knicks FO that wouldn't mind trading him for KAT, and I get the extension aspects etc.

But first, the logical move seems like the Knicks doing a small deal with the Jazz for Kessler.

It might be Dadiet and some piece for Kessler? I don't think the Knicks can do uneven trades, but maybe there's someone that comes back from the Jazz.

or, might be Kolek

https://www.spotrac.com/nba/player/_/id/91769/tyler-kolek $2,087,519
https://www.spotrac.com/nba/player/_/id/78133/walker-kessler $2,965,920

Again, looks like some finagling would be necessary to do it

Or, they just re-sign Precious

Are the Knicks hardcapped at the 2nd apron now? Sportrac says that, but I thought that the Knicks were at 1st apron.

The knicks are hard capped at the 2nd apron. They didn't take more money on in the Mikal trade (with the shake milton S&T ect). So they avoided the 1st apron being hard capped.

Hard cap is at like 188.9 MM and we are currently at 175.3

We are about 13 MM under the 2nd apron. This likely means precious signs with bird rights for about 8 MM per. Then we have the TPMLE we can use about 4.8 MM and we can sign another another non minimum player so that when trade deadline comes we can aggregate both those contracts to get back a player in the 11-15 MM range.

I also mix up the aprons. Sometimes, in my head, I'll think the 1st apron is the one at the top, and therefore worst.
Other times I'll think the 1st apron is the better one, since a team hit's it first and it's not the dreaded 2nd apron.

Sh*t is annoying.

Here, for other dyslexic types like me

NBA salary cap, luxury tax, first apron and second apron in 2024-25
Salary cap: $140.5 million

Luxury tax: $170.8 million

First apron: $178.1 million

Second apron: $188.9 million

So Precious and one of the remaining free agents as a depth piece and then trade for a legit C by the deadline.

Let’s see what Randle does on 8/3…

That is likely the obvious plan. Sign precious and then use TPMLE on another vet. Then start the season like that. Then they should have some decent tradable salary at the deadline and see what is available to improve the team around then.

Unless there is a trade we are waiting on.

The Randle extension deadline is another date to keep an eye on.

It will be a small deal, but it would be so nice to add Towns or Markkanen. I know, none of you like Towns, but he is that good so I don’t care.

Maybe the deal was not close when they signed Pacome.

Besides, Kessler earns almost 3M. We would have to send 2 players in any scenario.

What if the number was for a strategic salary match specifically so he can play for Utah.

The Dadiet thing makes some sense, the more I put the pieces together. Still seems unlikely but as far as conspiracy theories that this board comes up with this one actually makes some sense to me

-Utah obviously wants to tank to keep their pick and get Cooper Flagg and keep their books clear. It's public knowledge. They're going to have big money committed to two other big men (Collins and Markkanen ((assuming he doesn't get traded))) Kessler will be due for an extension next summer. Maybe they're trying to get ahead of that? They made a similar move with Agbaji at the deadline this year...

-The Knicks had an excess of picks this year and obviously couldn't get away with not picking at least a few prospects. It's possible they looked at Dadiet as someone a small market rebuilding team may have interest in because he's 100% not NBA ready at the moment..

-I thought it was also very interesting that many reporters thought he was a "draft and stash" on draft night. Then surprisingly the Knicks buy him out of his contract overseas but negotiate the smallest contract based on his draft slot... Both things that would seemingly benefit a small market team who may want to pinch pennies like, idk, say the Utah Jazz...

-The Knicks to my knowledge still have not signed Kevin McCullar officially..He could be a "sweetener' with no salary attached if they are still holding his draft rights.
