Re: OT: Olympic Games Basketball
I will be interested to see the hoopers that come out of Greece in about 15-25 years from now. Giannis must be inspiring so many people. I have to imagine there is a small flood of great Greece players coming.

He was jacking up shots and playing like a moron at the 2022 EuroBasket, so I seriously doubt it. Especially since he made it very clear with his actions that he was somehow wronged by the Olympiacos players, which would be his teammates on the national team also.
And Spanoulis built this team's offense to put Giannis in the 100% max best position for him to score on every touch he gets. The whole team system is set around making sure Giannis minimizes turnovers and maximizes easy looks around the basket. That's the exact kind of thing, having other players ahead of him in the offensive pecking order, that have always caused issues.
He left Olympiacos the first time, complaining non stop about how Spanoulis was the main focus of the offense and how Bartzokas and the owners of the team didn't respect him. Then he went to Fener and praised Obradovic at first for "respecting him" (honeymoon phase), and within a few years, he was complaining non stop about how disrespected he was and how they never gave him the role he deserved, and how players like Bobby Dixon, Bogdan Bogdanovic, and Nando De Colo were ahead of him in the offense's pecking order and were more respected than him...
He goes back to Olympiacos, and supposedly demands that Spanoulis' minutes get held to under 20, and that the offense revolves around Sloukas, or he won't sign with the team. The coach does that, and then within a couple years, he's complaining about how the coach and the owners disrespected him, and that he does not get the role he deserves...then he starts strongly implying that he can't get along with the national team, if Olympiacos players are on it.
He plays with Ataman, in the most guard friendly offensive system in Europe, which greatly pads the stats and efficiency of guards, and makes them seem to actually be much better players than they really are, or could be playing on any other team, and which is the dream coach and dream system to play in for any guard in Europe. The one that made millions for Micic and Larkin. Ataman's offensive system is the EuroLeague's version of Mike D'Antoni's offensive system. So a guard playing for Ataman in EuroLeague, is like a guard playing for D'Antoni in the NBA. And even then, it will happen. Just give it some time, and we will be hearing about how disrespected he is by the coach and the owner, because Kendrick Nunn gets too many shots, or because Grant gets too much playing time, or because they signed Lorenzo Brown, or whatever else nonsense.
He's an enormous cancer, and everyone outside of the Panathinaikos fan base knows it. In theory, he would be a huge help on offense for the national team, and Greece would be a very strong medal contender with him. But in reality, he's a gigantic cancer that turns locker rooms, media, and fans against his own teams.

Re: OT: Olympic Games Basketball
Friday, August 2
Matchup Time (ET) TV channel/Live stream
Japan vs. Brazil (men's) 5 a.m. Peacock
Australia vs. Greece (men's) 7:30 a.m. USA, Fubo
Canada vs. Spain (men's) 11:15 a.m. Peacock
France vs. Germany (men's) 3 p.m. E!, Fubo
So Giannis is definitely playing right? 9-point win is feasible and would be interesting to watch the final minute. Wish Canada/Spain game was first so we would know.

Greece generally had great results with their national team from like the 1986 to 1998 era (Nick Galis / Panagiotis Giannakis / Fanis Christodoulou / Panos Fasoulas), and from the 2003 to 2015 era (Vassilis Spanoulis / Nikos Zisis / Theo Papaloukas / Dimitris Diamantidis). They also generally had great results with their EuroLeague club teams in the 1990s with AEK, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, and in the 2000s and 2010s with Panathinaikos (Diamantidis / Spanoulis), and Olympiacos (Spanoulis). So if good results and/or really good players lead directly to more really good players from watching them, it should have already been happening by now.

No Dorsey or Thanasis were big misses for Greece. Obviously sloukas would have been nice but that seems like a weird situation

Thanasis is out for a year
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Yeah, I know, just stating that having an actual nba player would have helped, really unlucky for him.

Well, yeah an actual NBA player would help them but I have no idea what that has to do with Thanasty?

Good to see that hero ball logo 3s when you only need a 2 to win are a globe-wide epidemic.

Refs screwed Japan, stole this for France. Should've never been in OT.

FIBA refs can be just as crappy as Tony Brothers and Mark Davis.

The "Greece has no shooters and that's why they lost every game they ever lose" thing is a talking point that originates from a certain Greek club team that has been on a mission to sabotage the national team for the last 16 years. The actual problem Greece has had is that a certain segment of the fan base wants to cause rifts within every national team roster, because of a club agenda.
the shooting isn't nearly as big of a problem as every guard being terribly unathletic is
