Glad the Knicks brought him back. Still want them to upgrade the center rotation. I'm not sure what his future is with the team but he can eat up some minutes at the 4 or 5 until they find a better option and they still have access to the full TMLE.

Re: Per Ian Begley, Precious Achiuwa reupped Knicks
NYK being over the second apron makes it extremely difficult to bring in a difference-maker at center, even if Randle is outgoing.
I would happily send Ayton or RWIII from Portland for little more than filler (maybe cough up some second round draft picks if you're feeling nice?), but the Knicks can't aggregate salaries.
(Also it's not very sporting of me to share my true feelings about Ayton elsewhere while hoping to pawn him off on the Knicks.)

Achiuwa, Deuce and TMLE signing get us to around $15 Million... which centers make sense?

Can't do this, right? Knicks are over the second apron.

They aren't over the second apron but they are hard capped at the second apron. I'm not sure how far they are under the second apron at this moment.

Come on now, he will be ranked somewhere around 225 in salary. Some people moan about every thing.

Spotrac had them $13.6M below the 2nd apron before this deal (with 12 players signed). Achiuwa and a taxpayers MLE signing would eat into that $13.6M they have under the 2nd apron. That cushion includes McBride on the books at $4.7M.
Just doing the quick math, if McBride goes out in a deal they can take back up to $18.3M in salary under the 2nd apron. That $18.3M needs to cover the player coming back and however they fill the rest of the roster spots. So when the Achiuwa deal goes through and if they used the MLE, they could package those guy with McBride for a player making $18.3M minus whatever they need to fill in the rest of the roster spots. The math would work in that deal.
if they don't use the MLE, then they won't be able to get up to the full amount of cushion they have under the tax, but still pretty close to it.

They can't take back more salary than they send out due to apron restrictions but can match the outgoing total of McBride, Achiuwa and TMLE

Re: Per Ian Begley, Precious Achiuwa reupped Knicks
Achiuwa as a 15-20 MPG game off the bench is solid. If he’s asked to be a 30 MPG starter it’s less than ideal.
It’s the best the Knicks could have done in this market and if Mitchell Robinson is healthy and can give you 30 MPG over 70 games in the regular season and can be healthy enough to play big minutes in the playoffs the Knicks are in good shape.
It’s funny, because coming into the offseason I would have been more than ok running with a C rotation of I-Hart/Achiuwa if we could have turned Mitch into a future 1st.

I might be wrong, but I thought you can take back more salary than you send out so long as you don't go over the 2nd apron. It's kind of moot though because McBride/Achiuwa/taxMLE combined would be like $16M and if they took back more than that in the deal not sure they'd be able to fill in the roster spots under the 2nd apron anyway.

They can't take in more money than they send out since that would hard cap the team at the first apron which they are above now. It's why Shake Milton was added to Bogey trade for Mikal trade so they wouldn't hard cap themselves at the first apron back then.

I think this salary number gives NY the ability to use the taxpayer MLE to create another 5mm expiring deal and still have enough room under the apron to sign a buyout guy at the deadline

Seriously? I don’t see much difference between his stats and someone like Jarred Vanderbilt. However, JV got 4 years, $48m ($12m AAV). This seems like a steal to me.

Excellent for NYK.
Great guy to have as a backup 5, and also as a potential salary ballast. What’s not to like? He knows the system well, he’s good friends with OG, and he will come in handing when Mitchell R eventually gets injured again.

Absolutely cannot understand why the Kings didn't grab him. He was the last defensive 4/5 FA left and 6M is cheap.
