Dennis Schroder for Cole Anthony

Post#1 » by Syko_boB » Fri Aug 2, 2024 3:26 pm

Magic trade: Cole Anthony + 27 BOS 2nd + 28 ORL 2nd

Nets trade: Dennis Schroder

Orlando nets another aggressive guard on both ends to keep the intensity up when KCP or Suggs sit
He'd run the fastbreaks beautifully with Wagner & Banchero, while the bigs from distance give him open lanes to operate and get the opponents on their toes
The expiring deal gives them flexibility after this year to further improve before their extensions begin

Brooklyn magically turn an out of place vet into a long-term bench piece (still 24 y.o) who can get them buckets when Cam is off
Likely makes them less competitive this year which should be a goal, while they grab 2 picks in the near future to help with the rebuild

I don't see ORL adding picks for a similar, even smaller, much older player...although the Team Germany chemistry is interesting.

Schroeder is one of those guys that goes from negative value to overrated every other year. Cole's a beloved player in ORL, but I'd move him for a more proven guy...maybe expand the deal to net BRK the kind of assets they would want?

January deal...

BRK sends: Claxton & Schroeder

ORL sends: Wendell Carter, Cole Anthony, Gary Harris (TO), Goga Bitadze (TO), DEN 25 frp (top 5), ORL 26 frp (top 5)

BRK gets a 4 viable players, 2 of which are TO deals, in case they want to swing away in FA next summer. Cole is a younger version of DSJ on a good deal, with plenty of upside and fearless personality -happy to return to the Big Apple. WCJ is a much bigger, more versatile 2-way player than Claxton, who can hit 3's as well as score inside and defend and switch on the perimeter. WCJ is very smart and, imo, has a lot more in his offensive bag than he gets to show in ORL.

ORL gets older and wiser with a legit PG off the bench for when the Paolo/Franz + shooters offensive scheme bogs down. Claxton is a far better rim-protector than WCJ and the steep dropoff offensively at C isn't really a problem, considering ORL's forwards. I don't really rate Claxton much above WCJ overall, but the fit is perfect for ORL. With Isaac, Suggs, KCP, Claxton, etc, directed by Mosley...#1 defense in the league is virtually assured and playing ORL would be a frightening prospect.

Essentially...BRK gets younger, picks up two frps and more financial flexibility and I don't think they take a real step back on-court.

magic wont pay all that and claxtons new contract ...when he can shoot outside of 5 ft make free throw let me know..till then thats to much ..if free no asets maybe..if made 15 mill a yr for 4 yrs sure give some but not all the assets ...but as is ...easy pass

I'm really surprised there are Magic fans saying no to this in year one of Anthony's extension. If they had waited and let him test the markets as a RFA, he'd be making much less now.

its a 2 yr deal? not big money for 6th man..not sure why shocked ..he had off yr ..still solid contract if he does not go back to season before numbers 13/5/4 on 45.4/36.4/89.4 shooting i really expect better with no ingles changing his role ..then its expiring next season ..if he does magic will be picking up the 3rd yr at less then what mle count on it

If it's not a bounce back season for Cole, and he appears to continue to play like he did last season/playoffs, I'd do this before the deadline.

If Cole can get back to even his year 3 overall stats re: A/TO ratio and shooting efficiency, I'd probably keep him for chemistry reasons as I think when he's feeling it he can create more offense than Schroeder.

The value is good, but Dennis has been on like 5 teams in the last 3 years. He got traded for nothing last season. I dont know if its his attitude/him not accepting a back up role or what, but if that's the case it best to keep Cole. As a player I think he's a very good back up though.

If they do want to replace Cole, I hope the Magic aim higher even if it means giving up more assets. I still think Sexton is the ideal target.

From the Nets' perspective, they get a a couple of 2nds after acquiring Schroder for nothing, and take a chance on Cole. If Cole can shoot the 3 like he did in 2022-2023, he's a positive asset and they may be able to package him and another player (like DFS) for a bad contract and a 1st round pick.

Pretty easy to dismiss the "locker room chemistry" stuff...but Cole really is an awesome guy and Schroeder is known to be pretty prickly. Plus, Cole HAS done what we need in moments...if he can just up the consistency, he's better than Schroeder tomorrow. Big if, but maybe we/I have put a ceiling on Cole too soon...he's a young guy too. Admittedly, we've got guys some of us are willing to bet our eyes on that haven't done a thing yet other than measure well.

I guess I don't view those bounce back numbers as particularly impressive for a guy who is real liability on defense.

Feels like a homerun for Orlando. Schroder is a better player with a better contract. Easy move for Orlando. Can't see Brooklyn taking that 2nd year for this little.

His defense is improving year over year, even last year when his offensive efficiency took a step back. He's not as much of a liability as he once was and that's reflected in his DWS, DBPM, STL %, and he remains a good rebounder at the guard position.

Admittedly he still is too small to adequately guard a lot of perimeter scorers, sometimes takes too big of risks for steals, and has some lapses that lead to breakdowns. Despite this, I've been encouraged to see his effort and improvement on that end especially last year when he struggled on offense.

Anthony IS too small for ORL defensive standards...but he's bigger than Schroeder, who we're comparing here.

We just have a fundamental disagreement then.

Individual DRTG divorced from the team's DRTG are pretty meaningless. That aside, Schroder is expiring.
