Monitoring the Trade: Rob Dillingham for Jakob Poeltl

Noticed there hasn't been a thread on the eighth pick in the draft this year.

Now we get to watch and see how much we actually gave up to get Yak.

So far Dillingham has had a good summer league, and seems to be crafty and have a nice bounce to him.

However.....he is 6'1, so who knows if it will translate. I'm going to be here a lot, I hope you are too.

There were two more 2nds too and we might have picked someone else or tried to win a bit more and maybe we win the lottery like Atlanta or perhaps we would have tanked sooner. Perhaps we would be super-excited for the 2031 Minny 1st plus a swap. I’m fine with Yak but I still think they shouldn’t have made that deal and I’m pretty sure they’d agree now.

If you can't evaluate a draft pick post draft because "we could have picked someone else", then we can never evaluate the value of a pick, and whether or not we should trade it. We have to have some metric for what trading the 8th pick in this draft if we are going to say whether or not it was a good trade. Unless of course you think a draft pick should never be traded.

But it also means that if a super talent emerges between 9-30, the goalpost would likely be shifted based on this missed pick and not just Dillingham.

Tough thing about the trade evaluation is figuring out what to measure it against.

Someone drafted after that pick?

It becomes an impossible exercise as it's tainted by the motivations someone has to push the trade the way they want to see it.

I mean I know from a reliable source that they tried to trade to 6th to acquire Donovan Clingan so if they had the 8th pick 99% that trade happens, especially if the intel was there that Salaun would have been available for CHA at #8.

Donovan Clingan would have been a great pairing with Barnes NGL. It's just a shame because given the intel I have the Raps would have come out of this draft with him had they retained #8 overall.

So it's going to be tough to swallow if the Raps don't hit on their pick in 2025 and Clingan becomes Rudy Gobert++.

And we did the trade because Masai thought our Scottie/Fred/OG/Pascal core deserved a legit C. In retrospect, he was wrong, and has admitted that. Now the situation has changed, so Poeltl should obviously be traded by the deadline. I think we can get something way better than Dillingham. But better than Edey? Or Ware? I dunno.

But for some reason the negative Nancies on this board feel the need to re-litigate this issue over ... and over ... and over again.

I don't think they would pick Dillingham at all. Maybe include the next three picks who I think are all more likely:

9. Grizzlies draft Zach Edey (Purdue)

10. Jazz draft Cody Williams (Colorado)

11. Bulls draft Matas Buzelis (G League Ignite)

All three are interesting players. Plus like mentioned by RJBC they could have attempted to move up for Clingan. Not to mention the opportunity cost of not securing a higher pick in a better draft in 2023 plus the 2nds included in the trade and cashing in on players earlier. I'm not critical of that because I understand it's a business and they need to sell seats, beer and food.

The way I see it. It's all water under the bridge. JP is a good player on a reasonable contract. If things go south I believe he has value. None of the players missed blow me away. I'm moving on and looking forward.

It made me feel a bit better when Pop basically gave the pick away. If he didn't think anyone in that range was worth taking, chances are we didn't miss out on much.

I still would have rather kept the pick since Poeltl doesn't fit what we're trying to do (rebuild), but it's time to move on.

I think it had a lot to do with team fit and what they're trying to surround Wembanyama with which is guys who have aptitude for defending (which likely made Topic unattractive to them). I think it was a good move for them considering they're getting an unprotected 1st a while from now and a top 1 protected pick swap. Two chances that this could really backfire on MIN and haunt them.
