Yeah, we even have a word for that - inat.

That's when you're playing with your back against the wall, with everyone booing or doubting, criticizing etc. That's when you pull something you didn't know it was in you, when you do it versus the world, against all odds... But also can be used when someone is simply stubborn, depending on the context. :D

Pop is a great example.

INAT! Excellent info, thank you, Sgt Major.

Have to say, it's so endearing for Novak to do this with his kids old enough to really understand and appreciate it. And they're so proud, very cute. Tight family.

In golf, the winners changed out of slacks and nice shirts to put on sweatsuits, and look more like Olympic athletes!

And I’m not sure why Pau Gasol is handing out golf medals?

The Amazing Nola, love this guy, pure inspiration...
They stuck the heavy weight lifts at the end of the tournament per usual, interested to see what Lasha Talakhadze still has in tank, what he did in Tokyo was ATG performance in all fields.

I don't want to pull the "Women!" joke, but can't help it.

Not necessarily implying they're inferior in any way, but the stubborness man... the other three just watched Faulkner get away with the gold, none of them wanted to do the work to catch her while wasting energy in the process. They just looked at each other and that was it. Hilarious.

He's also won every slam three times (Nadal twice, Fed once) and every masters event twice (Nadal and Fed haven't accomplished it even once). And he has more year-ends and weeks at #1 than both by a wide margin.

I am an Aussie, but I was really rooting hard for the US victory. Over the moon to see Finke break that dubious Sun Yang world record.

Sun Yang used to train at the pool down the road from my old school. To say he wasn’t liked would be an understatement.

Belgium has withdrawn from the mixed (men/women) triathlon because their female participant is in the hospital with e-coli after having swum in the contaminated Seine river for the women's triathlon.

Terrible.

The 10km marathon swim is scheduled to be held in the Seine as well.

Alright, so a stat I've compiled on Swimming (hand compiled so I may be missing athletes or made other mistakes):

Here are the leaders in individual (non-relay) freestyle medals historically by gender:

Men's:

1. Gary Hall Jr. 5
(tie) Aleksandr Popov 5
(tie) Pieter van den Hoogenband 5
(tie) Ian Thorpe 5
(tie) Sun Yang 5

Women's:

1. Katie Ledecky 10
2. Ariarne Titmus 6
3. Sarah Sjostrom 5

And if we do it just by Golds combining the genders:

1. Katie Ledecky 8
2. Aleksander Popov 4
(tie) 13 tied at 3

For those who've missed any of my previous rants. Why do I focus on freestyle? Because from my understanding there's only one useful stroke for expert swimmers: The front crawl, which now gets called "freestyle" simply because you'd be a fool to swim any other way. The other stroke events exist largely because of European bias. Europeans came up with the breaststroke. Indigenous people came up with the front crawl. And so rather than culling the use of the useless breaststroke, they started having multiple swimming events.

But if we're just asking about who is actually best at swimming fast, don't bother with anything but the front crawl.

And we can see that Ledecky is by far the leader. Obviously, she's a woman and so it certainly makes sense to be reluctant to simply call her the GOAT swimmer, but I think she's pretty clearly the GOAT female swimmer.

Among the men we can see that there's never really been a clear cut stand out. If forced to pick on from these stats it would be Popov, but the sport of men's swimming is just waiting for an outlier talent to emerge analogous to Ledecky.

And no, Phelps wasn't that guy. Phelps won 2 total individual medals in freestyle, and only 1 gold. What Phelps excelled at was in being the best at useless strokes. The world of swimming, because of their massive amounts of unnecessary swimming medals, has anointed him as their GOAT, and they get to do that.

But when we compare athletes from different sports, we should hold on to our wallet when Phelps is talked about as if he's a bigger outlier within his sport than anyone else is in theirs.

Alright,
/rant :D

Embarrassing. Whoever came up with the idea of hosting swimming events in a **** infested river running through a city of 13 million people should be jailed. It's such an unbelievable health hazard that I can't believe humans with functioning brains approved it.

Kaylia Nemour was treated a lot differently by the French fans than Joel Embiid.

Her reasons for not competing for France were different too.

I'm glad Marcell got back to the 100m final again (after the not so great season) but this year has come back to be a Jamaica vs USA affair. Other notable exploits: Simbine (from South Africa)
