Utah should have the cap space to sign him outright so this is a no for me.

Yes this correct I think. If Utah wants him they can sign him. He is an RFA so it could turn into a sign and trade, but Kessler would not be going back.
Could be a 2nd round pick or two…think Grant Williams to Dallas situation.

True but others may get involved if the amount is not enough. This allows Utah to get Okoro guaranteed.

I don’t think Okoro is that important to Utah, if we can’t sign him outright then no biggie.

Re: Simple trade Utah/Cleveland part deux
Yeah. I’d rather overpay Okoro by 3-4 million a year on a 3 year deal than just throw Kessler in if I was Utah.
And Kessler seems like a weird fit in Cleveland to me personally? They should be looking to upgrade their backup bigs with a floor spacer who can play with either Mobley/Allen.
(Cleveland should do the OP, but just not what they need imo)

Of we want Okoro we'd probably work with Cleveland to get them a TPE and that's it.

If Cleveland was willing to get rid of him for nothing they wouldn’t have offered him the QO.

I'd rather keep Kessler. I would like to snag okoro as a signing, but I'm not interested in paying real assets for him.
I'd rather just give Cody Williams more run than do that

Re: Simple trade Utah/Cleveland part deux
If the Jazz don't extend Lauri, they'll have the money to sign Okoro outright. If they do, they'll want to send back Clarkson and I can't really see the Cavs agreeing to that.

If Cleveland isn't willing to pay what Utah offers they'll trade us Okoro and get a TPE or not match and get nothing. I suspect we won't pursue him at all, but that is the way it would likely work.

If Utah offers him numbers that make it painful for CLE to match, I can't see it NOT being painful for Utah either, at some stage. At which point, CLE says "good luck", and moves on. I just find the whole "we'll give you a trade exception" argument to be fake pity/generosity for the most part. Especially with CLE's penchant for leaving said trade exceptions on the shelf gathering dust until they expire. Having said all that, I agree Utah doesn't do the original deal, and Kessler, while a decent player, probably isn't a big need for us.

That's just how restricted free agency usually works. I'm not saying it to be a dick. At most teams usually get a few 2nds when they don't want to match. Regardless, I just don't see it happening with the R+E unless there is some salary on our team Cleveland wouldn't mind taking.

It’s less realistic than most ideas but I keep going back to..
Niang, Okoro, a second from Brooklyn and Cleveland to Utah
Clarkson and the later of Minn/Cleve 2025 first
DFS to Cleveland
Done once Lauri is renegotiated, Okoro can get about 13 mil first year..

If Okoro signs for a number north of the MLE, the Cavs would be foolish not to get a TPE if they could. This is particularly true with a TPE generated in August and Mobley coming off his rookie contract next summer.

I'm just saying it's hard to get excited about a TPE, with the Cavs record of kicking the tyres on half a dozen targets, putting some fluff piece out about how they have plans going forward, and then it just... expires...
