Kessler & Markkanen to the Pacers

Post#1 » by Syko_boB » Sat Aug 3, 2024 4:49 am

Utah Jazz trade

Walker Kessler
Lauri Markkanen

Indiana Pacers trade

27 UTA 2nd
28 IND 1st
29 IND 1st swap
Isaiah Jackson
Jarace Walker
Aaron Nesmith

Indiana retains plenty assets including the incoming ones that have room for growth and provide immediate impact
They'll be over the cap once Lauri re-signs but nothing they can't easily get out of if the experiment doesn't work out

Turner • Kessler
Siakam • Toppin
Markkanen • Sheppard
Mathurin • Nembhard
Haliburton • McConnell

Utah balances it's roster with more guys oozing with potential, and gets further away from the play-ins ahead of some more promising Drafts

Jackson • Eubanks
Hendricks • Walker
Nesmith • Williams
Sexton • Clarkson
George • Collier

This seems like a substantial underpay for Lauri Markkanen by a real first.

Something resembling a A- to B grade prospect is a strong bow to a trade. Bennedict Mathurin would be a fit and a starting point.

Based on what is being discussed as the price in most deals involving these players, I'd say Indiana is about 3 FRPs short.

A player-based deal is probably possible even if it isn't likely, but this is well short. Walker is pretty redundant with what we already have, though I'm certainly open to telling he and Hendricks just to fight it out or try playing Hendricks at center ... but I'd want Mathurin in return, too. Or Mathurin and several picks (which I don't think Indiana really has) and for Kessler to be taken out. Even then I wouldn't personally do it because I'm not enamored with either guy as the centerpiece of a Lauri trade, but I'd at least get why we did it.

Utah pretty easily passes and blocks Indi’s phone number.

I like the trade overall - maybe some tweeks.
Adding Mathurin might help but I think he rounds out Indy so I would leave him out.
I think JWalker is being undervalued and could be the main piece in Utah. Still needs a bit more (I might have added too much but this seems like enough).

Walker Kessler
Lauri Markkanen

Indiana Pacers trade

27 UTA 2nd
28 IND 1st
29 IND 1st swap (edited below)
Isaiah Jackson
Jarace Walker
Aaron Nesmith
PLUS -
Three or four 2nds in 2029-30.
2025 swap rights (UTA can send UTA, CLE or Minny pick - top 4 protected)
2029 1st swap (UTA can send UTA, CLE or Minny pick- top 4 protected)
2030 IND 1st (top 4 protected becomes a 2nd)

Don't see why we'd want Jackson. 1 1st, some roleplayers, a first, and a swap we are unlikely to exercise is verrrry underwhelming.

To be clear, Indy would obviously take Markkanen at such a cheap price. Kessler would never be a priority, as he’d be locked into a 16 minute a night backup role behind Myles Turner.

But, Indy also wouldn’t prioritize Markkanen. They need defense, especially the ability to defend big forwards. Markkanen is kind of the opposite of that, and I’d assume he’d walk at years as he’d be used out of position. Add in that the realistic cost would be too high, and Indy just likely doesn’t have the desire to partake in those types of discussions.

Utah deserves more to move Lauri. Indy isn’t the team to pay that.

That is really light for Utah coming from Indy.
Nesmith is a nice player, but need to add 2 more firsts probably. That swap is probably worthless.

Turner Nesmith and Toppin are tradable for assets that would better fit tanking Utah

More like 20 - 22 minutes a night as Turner played just 27 mpg last season and has played over 30 mpg just twice in his career, most recently way back in 2021 season.

I’m assuming Indy would still play a few small ball minutes a night with Siakam, Toppin, or Walker at the 5. But if you want to quibble over 4 minutes a night, maybe? Still pretty small potential role, no?

Utah would probably say no if they were only trading Kessler. They would laugh and hang up in an instant if it was only Markkanen. Let alone both players.

You have Kessler as worth a first, a swap, a recent lotto pick, an ok prospect, and a 3&d guy on a steal of a contract?

The core of the deal should be…

Lauri Markkanen

For

Bennedict Mathurin
Jarace Walker

…that gives UTA two young guys with good upside to fit into their rebuild and IND gets an all star forward just entering their prime while having depth pieces to pickup Mathurin’s and Walker’s minutes (Nembhard, Nesmith, Sheppard, Toppin) to soften the blow.

PG - Haliburton / Nembhard / McConnell
SG - Nesmith / Sheppard
SF - Markkanen / Furphy / Brown
PF - Siakam / Toppin / Johnson
C - Turner / Jackson / Wiseman

Step 1: Indicate this is Lauri’s value.

Who cares the trade still spoiled you. Great trade for the Pacers. Gave up next to nothing for him unless the 2026 pick is top 15 somehow and that’s unlikely.
