We aren't gunning for the 11 seed. We are gunning for the 14th or 15th seed in the west. Even with Lauri we should be right there at the bottom of the west and looking at a top 5 pick.

so both pf's in pascal and lauri weren't able to net great returns via the trade market. with pascal's age and state of the raptors, they decided to part ways and took the best available package while utah was fine with keeping lauri long term if need be.

Smart on Utah.

Very very questionable on Warriors front unless there’s something that hasn’t been mentioned by mainstream media which is possible.

Warriors have much more to lose than Utah.

class move by the Jazz. LM can play this year with financial security and if both parties want to part ways next summer or beyond, he might actually be easier to move with a larger salary.

I read that the contract has no options.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

In mine mind small over payment, but with new TV deal it is likely that salary cap will increase 10% next 2-3 years (after this season), so in 2026-27 his salary isn't that awful anymore if his scoring ability stays the same.

In trade Markkanen will be harder to trade. Teams who can or are willing to trade for him will decrease, but if there is the one team that want's Markkanen then Ainge can get the price he wants.

But now everyone can ignore Markkanen next season. No need to talk about him because he will be in a tanking team and no need to think about will he be an all star or not, cause he won't.

That was the correct decision for all involved.
Markkanen is a top 20 player IMO and worth every dollar.

$238 million over 5 years. That’s damn near $80 million a year. That’s more money than Scottie Pippen earned in his entire career. He’s definitely going to trash Jordan today

top 20? Go look at the realgm poll for best players. We're already at #17 and still have 8-9 players i would take over Markkanen

No it basically works out to $47.5 mil per season. Still eye popping but apparently that's the going rate these days.

Agreed I believe Lauri is a top 30 player. Maybe a bit of an overpay but I guess you have to do that in Utah. He took the full amount available in year 1 but the Jazz needed to get to the payroll floor anyway. Based on the full $42 mil base pay for this coming season it seems he did leave a little on the table in seasons 3-5 as this wasn't a full max deal. Good for Lauri. He ended up getting a bit screwed in RFA 3 years ago but this certainly more than makes up for it. Will Hardy is a good coach for him too.

So let's agree to disagree.
For a contending team, I will only take these players over Lauri:
Jokic
Luka
Giannis
SGA
Tatum
AD
Durant
Brunson
Curry
Ant
KD
Wemby
Brown
Haliburton
Booker
Mitchell

Some others players are "better" but practically are just too old/injury prone/toxic/etc.

Regarding the Warriors, I believe this is going to play out like Lillard in Portland. They'll try to bring in reinforcements but they're not going to gut their young talent to do it since they'll be rebuilding soon regardless. Kuminga may ultimately be as good as Lauri so why add a bunch of other stuff in a trade?

Ultimately, they'll probably fail to bring in the right pieces and I do think Steph will ask out. Probably faster than Lillard did.

Tanking isn’t what it used to be.
Signing him long term improves his trade value for next year. This will have more to do with long term success than aging a. Purple percentage points in the Flagg, Bailey sweepstakes.
2026 draft may be better anyway.

While the odds are flatter than ever, there is still a huge difference between say 5th worst and 11th worst.

5th worst has 42.5% chances to be in top 4 with a 10.5% for top pick. 11th worst has 9.5% and 2%, respectively. Almost five times difference, and it is not even five wins (actually four last year) separate 5th and 11th.

Especially if the likely prize is of keeping Lauri for another year is one more 2032 draft pick, and the opportunity cost is to give up lots of lottery balls in pursuit of Copper Flagg or top talent in a good draft. And it is barring injuries - the odds of a serious injury for an NBA player are not less than 11th worst team winning the lottery.

Note that he misses 25% of games with injuries on average and never played more than 68 games. In WC, missing your say 2nd best player for 25% of the season is huge, considering there are 11 playoff candidates and only 2 games separated 5th and 10th last year

I am against tanking but it seems like Jazz is also not trying to be good, just waiting another year to maximize returns from a trade. And I don't think their approach maximizes overall expected returns and give them A-level prospect they badly need.

Sure i'll agree on guys like Lebron and Dame.

Ja morant, Fox, Sabonis? No way i take Markkanen over those guys. Lauri himself is fairly injury prone.

There there are the younger guys like Scottie Barnes, Mobley, Franz, Lamelo, etc

I don't think he's top 20, more like in the 25/30 range.

Just check the fixed thread where people are voting for the best players, it's currently on the 17th and even Kawhi wasn't selected yet. And many more names to follow too.

There are LOTS of good players in that 15/35 range, I'd say.
