Re: Markkanen signing long-term extension (untradeable this season)
So my only question is are the Jazz going to treadmill again and get a low lottery pick in an awesome draft class or is Lauri going to have a knee contusion in February that somehow keeps him out the rest of the season?

Re: Markkanen signing long-term extension (untradeable this season)
Danny Ainge is just not a good GM and just doesn't get necessary trades done. He needed to move him and actually start his rebuild. Instead he tied up 50 mil/year in cap space for Markkanen which is nuts.

i think he is traded next summer. Utah can't keep finishing outside the play in and selecting 10th every year.
I understand keeping the asset but i don't really like this move from Utah.

Re: Markkanen signing long-term extension (untradeable this season)
Should the Jazz try harder to get off John Collins and Jordan Clarkson, and dump their contracts for expirings if need be? Mainly Clarkson, Collins probably has some sort of trade value but not a lot.
The ideal scenario right now is to get a good pick that nets a really good prospect (doesn't have to be #1 pick), clear some cap space and add someone next offseason. Lauri plus those 2 new additions become your core going forward, and then you have future draft picks to work with to try to add more talent (ideally package some picks for a player.)
If you trade Lauri next offseason you are basically delaying things another 3 years. Sexton has 2 years left on his current deal, if you trade Lauri would you also trade him too? I think besides dumping a couple of contracts, Jazz should be buyers rather than sellers (bird in the hand...)

Jazz finished last season something like 5-20 with Lauri on the roster. Lauri, Clarkson and Sexton sat out a bunch of games, but still...

Kudos to Lauri, going to Utah saved his career and his secured the bag.
The fact he started in a front court with Mobley and Allen yet now has the highest AAV is wild.
I'm happy for him, well deserved.

Second banana getting paid like a first option, people really overrate Danny Warbucks.

Moving him in a deal that doesn’t make the Jazz better long term would be stupid. That’s not how you build a team. Tank and hope doesn’t really work anymore. It’s just luck.
The contract will have him as the 24th highest paid player this year and will move down from there.
It’s something like 42.2/ 45.6/48/50/52.2
It will be around 25% of the cap the last two years and not a to 40 contract.

Lauri is not that good.
SGA was also younger at the time of his extension (he's a year younger than Markkanen).

no one saw SGA being as good as he is today
when he signed that extension he was at best a low 20s scorer

What does "at best" even mean? He was 22, 24 ppg is mid-20s, and he was improving every year. Top 10 player was a likely outcome for him and they had and still have plenty of time to build around him in his prime.
It's simply not a good comparison.

no, top 10 player was not a likely outcome. I distinctly remember listening to the Lowe Post in that era and Zach Lowe said on record "maybe a multi time All Star player" when the extension was signed. Do not rewrite history

How is that a win when they are out of the Cooper sweepstake?
Ainge's malfeasance is a black eye on the organization. This is a huge fail.
Didn't the Hawks just literally win the lottery having the 10th best odds?
This is just luck, that's not a plan. Nuggets drafted the best player in the league with the 41st pick, obviously we should trade all our assets for the upcoming 41st pick.
Sometimes plans don't work out (see pistons) but atleast they have a plan. The best players in the league right now were selected in top 5. Can you find elite players elsewhere in the draft? Obviously. Is it easier to find elite talent at the top of the draft? Also obviously.
Of the 15 players that made all-nba last year, 8 were selected in the top 10 (7 of which were top 5 picks).
2010 - 2014
Only 4 players became recurring all stars (Wall, Kyrie, Embiid and Davis) and 2 more (Beal and Oladipo) 1 or 2 times
Out of 25 picks cjamces of getting a player as good as Markkannen are pretty low if we go by that.
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

Best to put your money on the knee contusion

Actually more like : 42.2/ 46.3/ 50.1/50.1/50.1
Max this season, max next season and then a 8% raise
