Embiids letter to Macron, French president

“ President, I know your sincere interest in basketball and its development and, more generally, in the sport that brings honour to France. However, I am not writing to tell you about the NBA season that is opening and for which I have high hopes with my club, the Philadelphia 76ers. I am now in a leadership role and aspire to make my team a serious contender for the title.

I am writing to tell you about France. Although I spent most of my youth in the United States and France, I am a Cameroonian national. I was born in 1994 in Yaoundé. Cameroon will therefore always remain an important part of my identity. However, another one is French. Part of my family is in fact French and, in addition to sharing the language, I have often stayed in France.

A s soon as I have the opportunity, I visit my aunts, Suzanne and Lucie, living in Courtry and Courcouronnes, as well as my first cousin Pierre, who lives in Evry. I have fond memories of my summer vacations spent in France, like the summer of 2009, during which I was able to spend the entire month of July enjoying the capital. Moreover, I still regularly go to Paris, where I wish to acquire a permanent second home.

Moreover, after discussions with the French Basketball Federation, my choice has been made. I would like to take the steps to obtain French naturalisation and thus be eligible for selection with the Blues. I therefore do not wish to play for any other national team. I have sent a dossier to this effect to the Ministry of the Interior and Foreign Affairs. I have never worn the colours of a national team. It would be an immense honour for me to join this French team to participate in the next major international competitions, first and foremost the 2024 Olympic Games.

I evaluate the solemnity of my request, what it represents, what it means, but also, in some respects, its duration and complexity in relation to the usual criteria for granting nationality. I therefore ask for your support for these initiatives, support without which they cannot succeed. I am of course available to you and your services to support this common ambition that we share with the French basketball team and its managers. Thanking you for your attention to my request, I ask you, Mr. President, for the expression of my deepest consideration. Joel Embiid".

Exactly, Embiid had to even ask for the possibility because he has no business representing France.

But he did not just snub France, he begged to play for them. :)

Just want to say something about Ant. I'm a big fan only because he's on my team. I've watched every game he's played. I can usually tell when he's engaged and I'll say it out loud right away. That's what bothers me about him. He's often not engaged for a half here and there. Sometimes an entire game. The last 2 games I could tell right away he wasn't in it. I hate that. I was saying out loud today to take him out of the game.

When he's engaged he's a fantastic all around player. I guess all I can say is he's still young, just turned 23. Hoping he gets a passion to show up all the time.

Yeah, pretty embarrassing for France that they would hand out citizenship just to get someone on their team even though they never lived in and have to real connection to France.

Very impressive by Jokic and Serbia. They went up against cheat code USA team that was probably a top 3 USA basketball team ever assembled who also added Joel Embiid as another cheat code and they nearly took them down.

What is going to happen in 2028 if they still don't have a superstar? Not sure if the other countries have gotten better of if analytics has diluted the talent and reduced legit superstars.

I said some weeks ago that Embiid's role on Team USA is to neutralize Jokic and Wemby. Embiid scored 70 points against Wemby!

I will not argue against the french being weak and look stupid here, but Joel Embiid has been a French citizen for 3 years and American citizen for 2 years now :)

The US relied too much on their jumper this game and it almost cost them if Curry hadn't had a vintage game. I'd like to see them take it to Wemby and power through him early and put the onus on the home court officials. France with Gobert doesn't have enough offense to contend. They also need to pressure the perimeter much earlier, none of this drop coverage BS. Get out in transition and keep them at arm's length. Should be an easy win.

That's the most nervous I've been watching a basketball game since Game 7 of the 2016 Finals

There were like 4 or 5 times I thought Team USA would lose. It's clearly gotten to the point now where if Team USA doesn't send its absolute best, they're not going to win Gold. The rest of the world is too good now and anything can happen on the knockout stage.

All I'll say is thank you Curry for having the GOAT Olympic game by a USA pro. This is a blowout without him. And that's with Embiid, LeBron and KD all having solid games too. Hopefully France won't shoot lights out in the next one.

Dude in the previous thread said USA recruited size in Embiid, AD and Bam aimed to stop Jokic….? Two of those guys aren’t even legit centers. Any team needs a size option at center. The delusion is wild

Less the rest of the world has gotten better and more the USA players this era aren't as good relative to this era as players of yesteryear were. The game has inflated scoring stats but not sure I would consider any of the young USA players superstars. There are 3 guys who are legit superstars but they're also aging in Durant, Curry and James.

This ruleset is so much more enjoyable to watch than the NBA.

I have a feeling Tatum will have plenty of opportunities to shine in 2028. There's always going to be a couple odd-men out on a roster this stacked.

Garbage. Look at the proportion of foreign players in the NBA today compared to before. The World has just gotten way, way better.

Pretty incredible that there were 5 MVPs on the court there towards the end.
