A stat like this depends on having a team that gets you to that stage. No one argues that the Celtics line up is stacked, but somehow the team is ignored by the fans who think Tatum is so great. You can see in the Olympics that there are better individual players, who play in the NBA on teams that weren’t good enough to reach the championships, and this diminishes the work of guys like Jrue and White who were responsible for getting Tatum to that stage.

Sounds like you're diminishing the work of Tatum. He's already reached to the finals without Jrue and multiple ECF appearances without Jrue and White.

Tatum will have his time to shine in 2028 when Lebron, Curry, KD are done.....until then he's warming the bench.

It will be interesting to see if he plays in 2028 now.

Important to remember he's already shined. He won gold as 2nd leading scorer a few years back. Pop was heaping praise on him and left and right as one of the true actual 2-way guys in the game. Durant when he broke an Olympics scoring record that year said he was just holing it until Tatum passed him eventually. He was being hailed as the guy for the next generation of team USA basketball. That's not made up, that was happening. He doesn't have any box to check for his career resume. He's already experienced this at the highest level.

It wouldn't be surprising if this experience this time around just puts him off to playing for team USA again. Whether the benching is fair or unfair, he surely feels disrespected by it and could very well not want to subject himself to this again. Decent chance he just takes the time to spend with his kid who will be a teenager by then.

At this point people are making way too big a deal about it. If the team lost and you can point to something specific that Tatum could have done to prevent it, then great, but that has not yet happened. There's no agenda, Kerr has nothing personal against Tatum. As of right now it's just some odd optics, but that's all.

You guys! I was all excited for olympic basketball but I'm so damn grumpy about this Tatum thing I'm not really enjoying it at all and haven't even watched a lot of it. I think it may be stupid for me to feel that way but I can't do anything about it. I should be rooting for Derrick and Jrue and the whole team. Tatum mostly came off the bench as the 6th man. He and KD played together often but also Pop used them in waves. When KD went to the bench Tatum took over the offense and basically did his FIBA KD impersonation. There was really no letdown from one to the other.

He was only 23 and ended up averaging more points than any USA player in Olympic history not named Durant, Anthony, Jordan, Robinson or Barkley. And the team won a Gold Medal vs much stiffer competition than most of those guys played against.

Then KD declared JT to be the next leader of team USA and the guy who would eventually break KD's Olympic records. Pop made similar comments about Tatum's standing with USA basketball.

JT is a really good FIBA player. He's the only current 1st team All NBA player on Team USA. He leads the entire NBA in playoff points, rebounds and assists in 2020's. He just won a damn championship. He's been committed to Team USA since before he was even a pro. As we saw in the C's title run, he is more than willing to sacrifice his offense and just set other guys up and rebound and play defense if needed. Or he can score with the best of them.

I think it makes sense why he's not playing. I just think he deserved the respect of being told of this possibility beforehand. Clearly he wasn't.

Back in 2021, they were struggling to get people to play coming off COVID. Tatum was one of the few stars that actually was willing to play. He stepped up to play and was their 2nd best player to take home gold. IMO, he earned the respect of Kerr/Hill explaining the situation to him and letting him know this was a possibility. It's pretty clear that didn't happen. A big part of Team USA is managing personalities/egos to accept lesser roles than these guys are used to, and I think they failed that here. It's messed up that they let him just come in unknowingly to be made a social media punching bag out of. You don't prop the guy up to be made a mockery of like this. That's poor management when you're in this position.
