Jazz, Patty Mills Agree To One-Year, $3.3M Deal

The Utah Jazz and veteran guard Patty Mills have agreed to a one-year, $3.3 million contract. This is a veteran minimum deal for Mills and will reportedly be fully guaranteed and will see Mills reunite with Will Hardy. Mills and Hardy both spent time together with the San Antonio Spurs, when the Jazz coach was an assistant under Gregg Popovich.

Mills spent last season with the Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat. In 13 games with Miami, Mills averaged 5.6 points in 16.4 minutes per game.

The veteran scoring guard once again excelled for the Australian national team this summer. In four games at the 2024 Olympics, Mills averaged 16.5 points and his 41% of his 5.5 three-point attempts per game.

They see a former MVP who is coming in on a minimum (which means the NBA is subsidizing his salary). He plays hard (too hard?) every minute he is on the floor and if it doesn't work out it is costing them nothing.

I actually don't understand why it's difficult for people to grasp. You fill that roster spot with Westbrook or you fill it with an undrafted two-way player that will never see the floor. Easy call.

People get contract and skill level conflated. Westbrook was never going to live up to the $50m+ deal. I have never been a fan of his in general... but he is still light years better than Patty Mills. I love Patty Mills but he has been rough the past half-decade. Even at his best it's kind of silly to compare the two.

I'll address your 4th point 1st. D-Rose actually deserved that MVP, how his career turned out has nothing to do with his MVP season.

I'm more impressed by a Jokic or Luka triple-double because it's within the flow of the game and not, someone basket hanging to get boards and push. Also, his career average is 21/7/8

1) No, Rose won MVP because he became a media darling as CHI jumped from an 8th seed to a #1 seed. They remained a #1 seed the following year when Rose played 39 games. The team made a leap and Rose was rewarded. Rose was very good but it would be kind of like if Ant Edwards won the MVP last season. Everybody loves him but it's too early.
2) So anyone could average a triple-double by "Basket hanging"? Yeah, that isn't so. Rebounding is a skill, even if Adams boxed out for him to let him pad a little.
3) You can have Patty over Westbrook and I can tell you what you would get on a good team... a whole stack of DNP's.

I have always rooted for Patty and been kind of a Russ hater... but my hate has not made me blind.
