I actually don't understand why it's difficult for people to grasp. You fill that roster spot with Westbrook or you fill it with an undrafted two-way player that will never see the floor. Easy call.
People get contract and skill level conflated. Westbrook was never going to live up to the $50m+ deal. I have never been a fan of his in general... but he is still light years better than Patty Mills. I love Patty Mills but he has been rough the past half-decade. Even at his best it's kind of silly to compare the two.
1- I know what a minimum contract is.
2- Do you mean stat pad every minute he's on the floor?
3- I'm not a casual fan; I know he was never going to live up to that deal.
4- That MVP was given to him because of two reasons, 1- KD left him during that off-season to join GS. 2- He averaged a triple-double. I'm sure he also had 1 or 2 quadruple-doubles, but they don't like counting turnovers, but hey.
5- He's going into his 17th year in the league, and he still has the same issues, at some point some of these players aren't as smart as they want us to believe.
Seems like you got (unnecessarily) heated on this one. No need to get upset; we can talk it through.
1) I'm sure you do.
2) Stat padding is a farce. Russ has averaged 22/7/8 over 16 seasons. You make it sound like anyone could do that... if they were just a little more selfish.
3) I don't doubt that.
4) Absolutely. The worst MVP this century. (Rose was close.) MVP is an award driven by the emotions of the voters, but nobody stumbles into it unexpectedly. So, lets forget the MVP and just say he's a nine-time all-star.
5) Yes, he's 35. Patty Mills is 36. Those are the two players we are comparing, right? Westbrook has had two major problems his entire career: a) He plays too fast which leads to turnovers but also keep the defense on their heels. b) He's never had a coach that will bench him if he takes an ill-advised 3pt. I think Malone could address both of those issues.
I'll address your 4th point 1st. D-Rose actually deserved that MVP, how his career turned out has nothing to do with his MVP season.
Now
2- If you look at his game, he basket hangs. He hangs by the basket to grab the rebound and push it to get an assist, the scoring he can do. I'm more impressed by a Jokic or Luka triple-double because it's within the flow of the game and not, someone basket hanging to get boards and push. Also, his career average is 21/7/8
3(5)- I'm sorry but give me Patty Mills over him. I know what I'm getting with Patty, Russ on the other hand, has too many turnovers, basket hangs, is not a shooter, and has questionable IQ.
