Interesting but not in the way people are taking it. Most kickers have to retire because their play declines. If Carlson's career FG% is already where Crosby's ended up that's a pretty terrible sign.

According to the career stat, Crosbie didn't break 80% on FGs till his fifth year. Carlson shanking PATs is more worrisome to me at thispoint

It's a meaningless stat without context. Mason never missed more than 7% of his XPA's even with the new extra point rules, while Carlson missed 13% of his last season. Half of Mason's career misses came from 50+ yards, while Carlson was basically a 50/50 toss-up (53.8% to be exact) on any attempt longer than 39-yards. That's pretty awful for an NFL kicker.

I get people want to point to Crosby early years in comparison in the kicker discussion but are we just gonna gloss over that kickers across the league as a whole are better then they were back then?

Crosby was earning 4x more than Carlson earns, so we could take it into consideration too.

As a comparison. Anders Carlson was 24th last season in FG%, Mason Crosby by 26th his rookie season.

Wow I didn't really realize how bad Crosby was in his career. He only cracked the top ten in FG% 3 times as a kicker. And he had 9 seasons where he was 23rd or worse

Here are his ranks in FG%
2007: 26th
2008: 28th
2009: 25th
2010: 26th
2011: 12th
2012: 32nd
2013: 13th
2014: 23rd
2015: 16th
2016: 10th
2017: 25th
2018: 23rd
2019: 5th
2020: 1st
2021: 31st
2022: 15th

When Crosby was drafted league percentage was just under 83%. Last year just a shade under 86%

A nominal difference you could argue but I'd be willing to bet that attempts of 50+ yards have gone up in the last 17 years also so even a 3% increase isn't nothing to sneeze at.

I'm sure others can find distance percentage breakdown comparisons for the years from then till now (I only found ones that run till 2017 but it showed consistent increases in improvement scross pretty much all distances)

Absolutely. If Anders was perfect on extra points last year I doubt he even has competition in camp right now. But he was downright shakey the whole year on those and that's unacceptable.

I'm not out on him because plenty of young kickers turn things around but the leash is short because this team is trying to win and a point or two can make a huge difference.

On Crosby, he had a couple absolutely bad stretches in his career that skew his averages. It was kind of shocking the pack stuck with him through his bad.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow! What a Ride!-H.S.T.

Crosby also had his fair share of clutch playoff FGs.

I think that ranks in FG% tell more than FG% if you are comparing different decades, because the player would be compared to his peers, not evolution of the game. Same can be said to QBs and their %s.

What about kickoffs? Which one was better: Carlson, Joseph or Crosby? Honest question and this should be part of the analysis too.

The WR ranking actually pissed me off a little when I looked at the teams they had ranked higher

Yea, I get that the Packers don't have a classic #1, but I there also aren't many teams with WR cores I'd trade with. I love the depth.
