NYK-MIN

Post#1 » by R-DAWG » Fri Aug 16, 2024 2:25 pm

NYK: Karl Anthony-Towns, Naz Reid
MIN: Julius Randle, Josh Hart, Miles McBride, Mitchell Robinson

Why for NYK: Get a true #2 scorer to team with Jalen Brunson for the next 5 years while adding a stretch big to round out the rotation.

Brunson/Bridges/Anunoby/Reid/Towns
Kolek/DDV/Bates-Diop/Precious

The depth takes a bit of a hit, and NY needs to be prepared to give Reed a contract starting at $25MM next summer. That would take NY into next summer with 8 players on the roster at $195MM, which likely makes them a 2nd apron team. But I think it's worth it as the top 6 - Brunson/Towns/Bridges/Anunoby/Reid/DDV is on par with Boston by replacing Randle/Hart with Towns/Reid.

Note that NY would still have their taxpayer MLE to add some depth - Isaac Okoro or Doug McDermott would be the likely targets.

Why for MIN:
This trade is driven by payroll concerns, and potentially seeing Reed walk in free agency after this season. Randle comes in to replace Towns scoring. Hart adds a quality glue piece off the bench and Duce will provide a nice future offense/defense mix next to Ant with Dillingham as Conley ages out. Mitch Robinson is more cap filler here, but there are minutes for him backing up Gobert.

Terrible return for Minny. Julius Randle is not worth his weight in contract and Mitchell Robinson is JAG. Plus NY wont trade any of Jalen's Nova buddies

This is terrible for Minnesota. It doesn't even fix payroll concerns because Randle would need a new contract.

Very poorly thought out idea.

Why would Minnesota trade 2 bigs that can space the floor to spend a ton of money on 3 poor/non-shooters to be paired with Edwards? The spacing around him would be horrendous. An ageing Conley would be the only consistent 3 point shooter in the starting lineup with NAW and McBride being only shooting on the bench.

I also can't see New York moving any of the Nova guys at this moment before they see how they play together.

Karl is worth more than that whole package and the Wolves would need to cut 2 players which is a ton of money in dead cap and tax. This deal is beyond a non starter.

Don’t think this helps either team. Losing Mitch hurts our defensive identity more than the marginal Juju to KAT upgrade…plus we lose depth.

Awful for MN and illegal due to MN's cap status, so.... ?? Needs work

hangups MN - MN trading Reid without heavy compensation. trading KAT without equal level player back.
hangups NYK - Hart's departure seems like a no-go to me, he's loved by the fans and played a massive role in the playoffs.
Cheers

This is really bad for the Wolves. If Minnesota re-signs Randall, they would have gotten significantly worse without saving money. If Randle walks, they traded KAT and Naz for almost nothing. There is just no scenario where this deal helps the Wolves.

I just don't see it, you get two of the best defensive wings in the game and you have KAT & Naz back there to clean up if someone
get by :-?
Than you want to move one of the Nova Boz just to make sure you F up the locker room. Sounds like a good plan.

Yes, particularly since floor-spacing is critical to MIN with Gobert on the floor.

It goes without saying that I think the valuations here are vastly off, but I would point out that if MIN does make a trade, it would be Towns or Naz, not Towns AND Naz. In addition, MIN is already very very good at perimeter defense with McDaniels, NAW, and Ant when he is on ball. There are other teams that could use Hart and McBride more, so this should at least be a three-way. Finally, while I think the board under-rates Randall a little (while Knicks fans over-rate), I don’t see how MIN moving from Towns to Randle helps the Wolves either offensively or defensively, either now or in the future. And aside from production, Towns desire to be in Minnesota, and his close friendship with Ant, probably makes any trade based on KAT-for-Randle extremely unlikely

I don’t see a big Wolves trade coming, but I will try to point out what one could look like.

MIN brought back its seven best players this season, and that continuity (and the unlikely event owners will be able to pay to keep Naz and NAW the following year), makes MIN a win-now team. There other win-now priority may be to find immediate depth at PG in case 36-year old Mike Conley can’t (or shouldn’t) play 76 games and a long playoff run again.

Their secondary needs would be preparing for the future financially. MIN has never shown an ability to draw top free agents, so if they trade Towns for some financial relief, it would need to be for a cheaper star. Towns did better than I expected as a PF defensively, but he may have more value on another team where he is a match-up nightmare as a center. Saving some money may allow them to pay Naz and NAW next summer, depending on ownership’s willingness to spend into the tax.

The future timeline may be Ant, McDaniels and Naz, who are all close. Everything we hear from Connelly and the organization is that they are fully committed to Dillingham being the PG of the future, but that may be their riskiest hope. I think there’s maybe a 70% Gobert gets an extension sometime this year, exchanging years for dollars, and one eye will be on finding the right teammates to maximize Rudy’s big strengths and weaknesses (three point shooting). That said, Connelly believes in continuity, and local reporters say that this locker room is the most in synch they’ve ever seen. They hang out together off the court, they sacrifice for team goals, and they are all firmly committed to Finch.

Perhaps the Wolves have painted themselves into a corner, perhaps this is what Connelly envisioned. Unless something goes tragically wrong, I suspect we won’t see anything happen with MIN until after next year’s playoffs.

We are in Sabonis for Hali territory. You would want to promote Naz to starting PF to play with Rudy and get a blue chip PF to backfill the KAT role. You would also want a PG prospect to play behind Dillingham when Mike retires in a few years (assuming quality slide doesn’t happen.) Also without KAT we become thin at C so we would want someone behind him. You are talking about JJ and OO from the Hawks and either a PG from a third team or a combo guard that you have high hopes for. Seems very unlikely.

Doesn’t work. Minny is way over the 2nd apron so can’t take back more money or aggregate. Knicks are hard capped at the 2nd apron and can’t take back more money because they are over the 1st

KAT is a defensive liability and disappears offensively in playoffs. Randle does neither of these.

KAT’s defense was one of the main reasons the Wolves got by Denver. Remember that KAT was also playing on a bad MCL to which he just told PG (on his podcast) that he was barely able to walk sometimes.

Remind me about all of Randle’s post-season accolades..?
