Alcaraz is well also on track to pass him as well.

Federer and Alcaraz are comparable to peak Mahomes in their sport and Novak more comparable to Manning or Brady.

Nah, this is a dumb take. Federer’s peak was during a terrible era for tennis which includes 2003-2005. He got surpassed greatly by Novak and nadal. Federer is third on the all time list. Djokovic’s 2015 surpasses Federer’s peak.

Pete Sampras was a robot. His game and personality had similar characterestics as a robot purchased on eBay.

Borg is my absolute favorite player of all time. I have only 1-Novak, 2-Nadal, and 3-Roger in front of him.

I liked Federer's style better but I also like Novak and think he's the goat. I will say on a sidenote that I wish racket technology had stopped evolving in the early 90's.

I agree, the racquet technology evolution killed serve and volley and made tennis playstyles too similar and defence too good. I like variety in playstyles and there was way more of this in the 90s than there is now. And the surfaces were more different too and favoured different playstyles a lot more than today, it used to be almost impossible to win Wimbledon as a baseliner, now it happens every year.

Federer being in the GOAT conversation is mostly stylistic, and the fact he was the first player who looked like he could dominate to the level that Nadal.and Djoker since have in the modern era. Even in the days of Agassi and Sampras, there was still a good variety of slam winners and you never felt like they were unbeatable. Then Fed comes along and it felt like he won everything. He was also the one to break Sampras' men's slam record and also the first to 20 slams, two records which seemed insurmountable.

There's no objective tennis argument for Fed over Djoker and Nadal now though I don't think. He arguably has the GOAT peak though.

As always with Djokovic, he's a divisive personality which can affect how people see him. The covid stuff didn't help either.

Style wise

Federer: Led Zeppelin
Djokovic: Deep Purple
Nadal: Black Sabbath.

if anyone thinks one of the bands is "unquestionably" better than the other two is a moron.

Wasn't Federer clearly better than Nadal outside of clay? That seems like a pretty easy case to have Fed over Nadal.

Yes, because Deep Purple's most famous riff is not a stolen Bossa Nova track.

I never said I like deep Purple either. All around it is a bad analogy

He was better on grass. Nadal got the better of him on the hard court surfaces though and ended with a pretty significant advantage head to head overall.

This is pretty funny to me, comparing tennis greats to rock (or hedging to metal) music. Totally here for that. Among these three, I'd disagree most with Deep Purple for Djokovic, they weren't as 'dominant' to me but kind of fit being relatively unpopular for how good they were. Rush might be an interesting choice, or CAN.

(Aside: is Andy Murray : Cream ? The Smiths ?)

Let me try that for alternative rock 2000's with three distinctive British bands.

Finesse, crowd appeal, superstardom = Federer / Coldplay
Balance, lesser popularity, different surfaces / mixed genre = Djokovic / Radiohead
Raw power, clay / hard rock specialization, and overall uniqueness = Nadal / Muse
Cheers

Federer won most of their matches on hard court, largely thanks to dominating their matches on indoor hard courts.
