Anything other than mild annoyance over the last 3-4 roster spots is probably overblown, but if they were pretty set on going literally any other direction with the kicker, then it sure seems like an obvious blunder to waste a roster spot on Joseph while you had a couple guys (DuBose, Anthony Johnson Jr.) that were (IMO) obviously gonna get claimed if they exposed them to waivers.

First, aren't you going to have to use a roster spot on a kicker no matter what? Eventually Joseph gets dumped for Narveson if he's the guy?
Second, they may have wanted to keep Joseph in the event that nobody they preferred got released from other teams.
Third, while maybe you don't want to lose DuBose, Johnson, etc...there are 31 other teams that are going to get crunched and drop some preseason stars that their fans aren't happy about losing. We can get one of those guys if we do have an extra spot.

I imagine they'll be right about some and wrong about some and not a single one will end up mattering one way or the other.

They still would have needed to release someone to pick up a new kicker unless they planned to sign one to the practice squad.

I'd have cut one of Mosby/Cox, there's no reason for 6 Edge guys
No need to keep 10 OL
Keeping Clifford over Pratt is baffling
Keeping Zayne Anderson who wasn't even good on ST last year over Johnson Jr is insane
It's just depth but depth can matter
If you think your edge guys are good you can never have enough of them. LVN will likely play some inside also.
OL is the same way you always seem to need guys there. Maybe one of the Young will develop the way Walker did.
If they think Willis is a better prospect over Clifford and Pratt, then it makes sense to keep Clifford in the short term because he knows the offense. Pratt might have chosen Tampa anyway so maybe the Packers didn't have a choice.
I would have kept Johnson over Zane, but I trust the staff to know what they want from their likely 5th best safety.
Brenton Cox was Edge5 last year and played 4 defensive snaps. What the heck is edge6 going to provide?
I understand some of the decisions we're essentially out of Gutey's hands(they weren't going to keep 7 WR or 11 OL) so losing guys like Dubose isn't necessarily on Gutey. But it still hurts the overall depth of the organization, it wasn't that long ago that Malik Taylor & Darrius Sheppard were getting called up from the practice squad to play real meaningful WR snaps for a contending team due to injuries. Some I blame on Gutey(Pratt, Johnson Jr, Welch), some I blame on just having a numbers crunch(Dubose, some of the OL depth)
I have no idea how Hafley will rotate his players in on defense. Maybe he likes to have a lot of edge guys to keep them fresh.

I don't get this line of thinking tbh. The margins in sports absolutely can matter. The Brewers make a killing in baseball by being better than 99% of teams on the margins. It's not hard to find recent examples of bubble guys/practice squad guys who had to play significant snaps for the Packers(some good, some bad)
Coach Drew: "Milwaukee has always been a team that I have been intrigued by. When we played them, they were a tough team for us to play. Although we did beat them all four times"

Yes, I would have just brought a kicker off the practice squad. It was a valid discussion with the QB's too before the Willis trade. Clifford over Pratt to the PS. Anderson over Anthony Johnson or Rochell, not keeping DuBose/7 wideouts, using your only IR return designation on Jonathan Ford. Bleh. First time in a long time that I'm not a fan of the cutdown moves they've made. Sure, "the coaches see these dudes every day blah blah blah". Coaches can be wrong, and I think in these instances they are.
Edit: Rochell made the practice squad, thankfully.

Were there a lot of teams that kept 7 wrs on their 53?
I believe you only get 8 IR return players for the season. I wouldn't have used two spots right away unless it was obvious. Not even sure if Ford was a good choice for one of them.

If Willis is truly going to be QB2 for week 1 then the decision to keep Clifford over Pratt is even more baffling

If you're banking on a system like the brewers making these guys truly matter on a game to game basis, than you believe the guys making the decisions and doing the coaching know what they're doing...which means you trust their decisions and aren't complaining about fringe guys that likely won't matter.MVP2110 wrote:jute2003 wrote:I imagine they'll be right about some and wrong about some and not a single one will end up mattering one way or the other.

Packers taking a massive hit on their depth today. I'm annoyed at Gutey's decisions all over again
Claiming Narveson is cool though
Massive what now?

He must be a quick study if it's no longer the plan to elevate Clifford for the first week or two. And that's good since we'd have to release someone to clear a spot.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I like Gutey for sure, but he's not infallible by any means. I get that we're purely talking about depth guys here but the margins can absolutely matter in sports and acting like they don't is a line of thinking I just don't understand.

Can you name some of these players that turned out to be anything in the NFL that the Packers were actually wrong about?

Packers released K Greg Joseph and signed the following players to the practice squad: DL Deslin Alexandre, QB Sean Clifford, DL James Ester, K Alex Hale (NFL International Player Pathway program), WR Julian Hicks, G/T Donovan Jennings, CB Kalen King, RB Nate McCrary, RB Ellis Merriweather, CB Robert Rochell, G/C Lecitus Smith and TE Messiah Swinson.
Like that Jennings made it to the squad.

Do we know if the Packers wanted Pratt on the practice squad and he chose Tampa? Or do you mean they should have kept 3 QBs on the 53?

I'm not gonna pretend to know a whole lot about our new kicker but he isn't Jospeh or Carlson so I'm putting the last 24 hours in the win column
