OT: Scarborough Shooting Stars to build own arena?

Post#1 » by dagger » Wed Sep 4, 2024 5:27 pm

It looks as if Scarborough Shooting Stars of the CEBL are planning an arena of their own at Scarborough Town Centre. It would seat just under 5,000. Who knows if the owner has the money, or is just floating this concept to look like a big shot. But here is the first media I'v seen on this.

Well he does own Aarrow recruitment agency & the adjacent property to the arena site. They said shovels should be in ground in a couple months.

We'll see tho, it would be good for scarbs tho. If it could be a music venue that would be cool too

There is no way the CEBL is doing well enough to be able to afford this.

Like I hope I'm wrong because I want basketball to succeed in Canada but just seems crazy to think of lol.

A capacity of 5,000 seems way too high. But the location makes a lot of sense and could probably attract like 500-1000 people per game if tickets are cheap.

I guess 5000 makes sense if they plan to also rent it out as a concert hall and stuff. I'm not sure if Toronto has a shortage of those.

Ones with good sound quality that don't ruin your ears are nice to have. Coca Cola Coliseum sucked last time I was there for that, and it's kind of in that ballpark of seats.

some other teams r pulling 10,000+ / the record is well over 100,000 for a szn for few teams. I don't think we'll sell out every game at 5000, but the league is definitely growing.
yeah it should be a concert hall as well tho

It would have to be multi use to even be plausible, and concerts make the most sense for that. Otherwise, how many home games does a CEBL team even have every summer? No way it can sit empty, there would have to be bookings for other events.

It will be a the right location for an arena that size, not sure how the SSS team will do for attendance in that area compared to milking the wealthy students at UTSC and well off families in the surrounding area of the PAN AM.

Someone needs to build a serious cricket stadium around there with the coming subway access. That would be the draw and future.

Scarborough Town Centre is low-key an awesome spot to build an arena. I have way too many fond memories of going to the movies and the in-mall arcade (showing age). The real issue would be do they have the funds & that they'd have to repurpose the arena while not in use for games.

Once the subway is ready, it'll be easier to get to than Ricoh, for both drivers and transit commuters. Maybe it could steal some of their business (things like concerts, WWE, conventions, etc.). I hate going to Ricoh since I need to go bus > subway > other subway > streetcar. It takes me like a whole day to get there (we really need better **** transit in this city).

Ah, good old Scarborough. Not what it used to be, but if you grew up there as a millennial in the 2000s and 2010s, it really makes you a chameleon who can adapt and get along with any sort of person you ever meet.

I still remember when I first started my corporate job downtown and a girl from King City asked me how it was to walk there in the nights and I was so confused

Oh 100% the location it's premium location. Although Coca Cola (Ricoh) or whatever it is now? does have a GO hub that STC wont and that limits some GTA travel. For the next 20-30 years after the subway stop is built, Central Scarborough will still certainly become a destination right off the 401.

As for better transit, dont hold your breathe. At the high rate of GTA growth today and with no redundancy built into our subway system we will never have reliable or fast transit on the outskirts in out lifetime. Car traffic will suffer at a rapid rate as the population growth along main streets will force the need for more rapid bus removing lanes, highways directly surrounding the City will become over filled and the TTC will grow into a more congested and unreliable mess when the subway is down for maintenance, jumpers, fires etc. In the face of higher labour costs, greater safety and material cost inflation it will be interesting to see if they can even find an expedited solution to tunnel extensively in the next few decades for the future or whether travel restrictions become the (intended?) 'norm'.
