Clone one current player - which team is best?

Post#1 » by durantbird » Wed Sep 4, 2024 5:31 pm

You are able to choose one current player, clone him once and add him to his current team. Which resulting team is best?

For example, you clone Giannis, Bucks is Lillard Middleton Giannis Giannis Lopez. You clone Durant, Suns is Booker Beal Durant Durant Nurkic.

Is it Jokic? He's the league's best player, but two Jokices may overlap too much both needing the ball in their hands. Is it Luka? That applies tremendous pressure on defenses, but is Dallas' defense good enough? Maybe SGA? Tatum? LeBron?

You can choose anyone

Miami with x2 Butler
GSW with x2 Curry
LAC with x2 Kawhi

I think with teams like Boston, Denver, OKC, or even Milwaukee you sort of have some diminished returns. Another Tatum on Boston doesn't really fix any issues or add much. Same for another SGA on OKC.

Kinda looking at teams that have a big drop-off from their best player, or their best player doesn't really have any other similar architype guys on their team.

A big IF, but 2 Kawhis would be best if healthy. He's a wing that can guard multiple positions, score from anywhere and doesn't necessarily need to be ball-dominant.

I was also considering Lauri Markkanen for Utah. You can have 2 of him play in the frontcourt:

Collins
Lauri
Lauri
Clarkson
Sexton

...would be a pretty nice starting 5. I don't think they'd be the best in the league, but they would improve a lot.

Maybe OP wasn't clear, but I'm looking for the team that is going to be the best in the NBA with the clone. Or best of all possible options with a clone. Is Miami the best in the league with another Butler?

SGA, Tatum, maybe Edwards and Giannis. Injury prone players would be risky here.

Two Currys would be entertaining to watch.

If you clone two Kawhi's you can probably get a full season out of him.

Clone Jordan Poole and go for the WOAT team award.

Philly with 2x Paul George + Embiid + Maxey I think deserves a shout. And probably has a slightly better chance of winning the finals than the Clippers, even if Kawhi is the best actual player to clone in theory. But with poor health Philly still loses to Boston.

LA Lakers with 2x AD is an interesting thought experiment, though it doesn't fix their backcourt issues.

2 TJ McConnell's would leave the league in shambles.

Feels like having two AD's would be incredibly potent defensively.

Two Curry's would be absolutely painful to defend and far more potent offensively than even the best 'Splash Brothers' season.

They might score 60 a game from the foul line alone.
