It's a question I have asked myself many times during and since the draft. I can see passing in round one as the top OTs were gone. But I could have lived with Suamataia in Round 1. Passing on him in Round 2 blew my mind. Obviously the FO has a lot more faith in Moore than I do, but he struggled in the preseason. I just can't fathom not using a single pick on the position in the past two years in particular. McKivitz has only been okay, and who knows how much longer Trent can play, even freak that he is.
That's why Lynch is a bad GM when it comes to drafting positions of critical need. Just cause he lucked out on Purdy and Kittle does not give him a pass to play anything he wants.
After the Bucs romp KC with Tyreek
in the SB, they let him walk to build that OL up and won the SB back to back while their receivers were dropping passes like hot cakes. So did Lynch learn anything from that? Yes, I'm going to reach for a receiver cause i am the best GM on find diamonds in the rough like Purdy.
A few thoughts. First, yes, KC let Hill walk and then won the SB without him. But this past year they did it more due to the defense than the offense, which was mediocre for most of the season and through the playoffs, while the defense was lock-down. And no one is arguing Purdy is Mahomes and can make things happen with replacement-level receiving talent.
Second, I did not love the Pearsall pick, but he wasn't some absurd reach. Most major sites ranked him somewhere between 35 and 45. There were a ton of late-first, early-second WR prospects who were ranked between 25-50, and six WRs were taken between picks 28 and 37. Any one person's ranking of those guys is going to be based on personal preference more than anything definitive, and undoubtedly some will bust and others will be great.
I have not been a big fan of the FO's early drafting overall, but they have a demonstrated track record of being incredible at finding late-round gems. It's a huge part of the reason why these guys still have jobs.
