You don't understand the game. He has obviously accessed all the teams with available cap space and chose the Nets because of the available money. He will obviously ask for a trade to a contender at some point after signing for the max.
This feels wrong
Butler turns 35 before this (Miami) season starts -- he'll be 36 when he starts his next contract.
Butler hasn't played in >65 games since his age-27 Chicago season and he's never been a definitive top-5 shooting guard / top-10 guard in the league.
For comparison, Chris Paul (who is historically maligned for health) had just turned 34 when he was traded to OKC and had played 70 or more games in half of his 14 seasons, including all 82 at age 29 and 74 games at age 30. He was definitively the best guard in the NBA at least once and consistently a top-3 PG in his prime.
Paul went on to play 70 games in back-to-back seasons at age 34 and 35 with OKC and PHX to get that last contract Butler is seeking.
Butler might get a Kawhi or PG13 length deal but he would likely have to do something special this year to get a full max.
