Fun fact: In the 2019 U19 US Women's Basketball Final, in which the US beat Australia, the 5 starters for the US were -
Aliyah Boston
Nazharah Hillmon-Baker
Paige Bueckers
Rhyne Howard
Haley van Lith
A nice team, eh? Cameron Brink was on that squad too, but Boston got the starting nod.
Paige went 17/7/6 in the Final and was named tournament MVP. Oh, and some young lady named Caitlin Clark came off the bench, and went 2/2/0 with (yep) 2 turnovers.
However, that's not quite the full story. It wasn't that Caitlin was unloved; quite the contrary. She was the only player on the team who was young enough to qualify for the next 2021 U19 tournament, meaning that as the selectors viewed things, she was the single best player of the next tournament's crop. Good call that. Caitlin went 13/8/8 in the 2021 Final and was named tournament MVP.
That's good stuff. Thank you.
Seening that Rhyne and Naz Hillmon were both on that team make the Atlanta Dream even more confounding than they already are.
On paper, the Dream are every bit as good as a team like the Storm. Of course, they weren't healthy in the first half. But even since they've gotten healthy with all this talent, they keep playing hot potato with the 8 seed against a Chicago team that was done the minute they traded Mabrey (and was surely done when Chennedy got sick).
