Re: The Washington Commanders Thread
To me, the one and only one stat that mattered was Daniels' 16 carries.
That's insane.
Otherwise most was fine, about what you'd expect for a team with a new QB, new coaching staff and, what, 60% roster turnover? Remember, Gibbs started 0-5.
OTOH, those 16 carries mean that Kingsbury is just clueless. Quinn isn't blameless, either.
This will be a much better team by halfway through the season, I just hope the QB survives that long.

Daniels didn't really take big hits on those runs though. The one run i really didn't like was the called run where he just dove into the left side of the line like a fullback. That was dumb.
A lot of his runs were called passes and he just took off. Hard to blame anyone for that because he got good yardage and then got down.

Ugh, my Bengals... they're clearly not coached very well. They're a good team that is just not in sync. Is it better to know you're good, but always lose the first two games of the season, costing you any chance at success in the post season? Or is it better to just suck

Here's what Boswell thinks:
It doesn't matter how the runs are characterized, whether they are scripted or not. A QB run is a QB run. RG3 never had more than 13 in a game. Most QBs have FAR fewer. They are all counted the same.
Daniels needs to be coached to throw the ball away. Daniels needs to coached to slide. Basic, basic stuff.
I'm starting to think that Kingsbury is like Shanahan wrt player management, but without the football brains.
Sure as the sun comes up in the morning, if Daniels continues to run this much, he will get hurt. The only question is how badly.
What makes it more frustrating is that we have all seen this before. It's seared into our memories (RG3).
Quinn is every bit as responsible for this as Kingsbury, btw.

Listen I was as big of a trade back guy as there was here on the draft. Mostly because of this issue with him running. But he can throw and he will learn. He isn't trusting the concept yet he knows the route he knows where the wrong should be he needs to let it rip and trust the wr. He's not there yet.
Hopefully he gets there.

Quinn came out and said they don't want Daniels to run that much. It was his first game i just dont think the carries are a big deal. If he has 16 carries in a november game then i will get concerned.

Jalen Hurts has had 18 in a game twice, he had 17 during the super bowl season. Lamar Jackson has had 17 or more 8 different times

And here's stats for some other notable QBs, per Dan Steinberg:
"More to the point, here are some prominent mobile QBs with at least 500 carries, with the number of times they have ever carried the ball at least 16 times in a game
Cam Newton (1)
Josh Allen (0)
Michael Vick (0)
Russell Wilson (0)
Steve Young (0)
Aaron Rodgers (0)"

Kliffs gameplan was dog shi and the receivers struggled to get open but Jayden has to take some shots.
Picked up offensive rookie of the week, not bad for just an average outing.

Bingo. That was his issue his first year at LSU. Didn’t trust his receivers and would tuck it and run at the first sign of trouble. He evolved a ton his second year and well, had a historic season. He can drop dimes. It’ll come. But man that WR room outside of Terry is abysmal.

They would have won easily without all red zone penalties, not to mention an opening TD getting called back.
Pretty obvious we drafted the right QB.

Re: The Washington Commanders Thread
What was most encouraging was how the coaching staff improved on a lot of last week's issues.
JD took that one nasty hit, but they put him in harm's way less this week, and he also took fewer running chances. A ton better.
Franchise is visibly moving in the right direction, and it feels like it'll keep doing that. First time in 25 years that I can say that! Wow, the Snyder era really was a long time...

All I see is incompetence tbh.
Reality is if your offense isn't competent then you're an incompetent football team. No defense is good enough to carry teams in the modern NFL in the post season. You'll win ugly regular season games but that's it.
And so far this offense looks really incompetent. Just miserable. As bad as anything we've seen in the last 10 years.
I'm not saying to fire everyone, but everyone will be fired if it isn't turned around. You can't look at these things like the NBA. NFL turnarounds tend to be really quick when the right pieces come together. I'm not saying teams win chips, but the light flip from incompetent to competent is pretty immediate.

Re: The Washington Commanders Thread
I'm resigned to the fact that this is a 2-3 year project. I think folks are really realizing now that this team lacks overall talent and Rivera was running a slop shop for years. We need help at o-line, corner, and we need a wide receiver and a pass rusher. They've got anywhere between $70 to $100 million in cap space, I would expect they address 2-3 of these needs in free agency and try and supplement through the draft. If we won 6 games this season, its a success. Our 3rd down defense is downright awful right now.
From 2021-2023, our first round picks were Davis, Dotson and Forbes. That's just horrible drafting, basically striking out on all 3 picks.

I don't buy that at all. They've gained over 700 yards in 2 games with a good balance of passing/running. They just need more help on the offensive line but i don't see incompetence.
The defense is a different story.

Re: The Washington Commanders Thread
Multiple red zone false starts in your own stadium is incompetence. 7 field goals to beat a terrible tanking tier Giants team is incompetence.
The issue with yardage is we've seen this franchise (particularly in the Cousins era) move the ball and then just not score at all in the red zone. It's not a thing that you "inevitably" break through. We've seen it be a thing for entire seasons. And we've seen competent combinations (Gruden, Cousins) struggle to break through it.
So when I see a Kingsbury offense showing similar failings, I don't think as if improvement is inevitable. That's the thing about the NFL. Improvement isn't inevitable. You look at a lot of coach/QB combinations and sometimes their best years were year 1/2. Elite combinations will stick together long enough to improve, but mediocre to bad ones tend to get fired or replaced pretty quickly.
That's not to say that's the case with our guys. I'm just saying we need to get better fast. Real fast. More touchdowns next week.
