MIA - GSW: Jimmy Butler to the Warriors

Post#1 » by MessiahUjiri » Mon Sep 16, 2024 2:59 am

This is inspired by a previous MIA thread. Here’s the supporting context:

- Neither Miami or Golden State are good enough to compete, but they are too good to tank. Hence a trade desire is there

- Golden State is considerably older, Miami younger. We can do an old for young trade to match core timelines

- Miami probably doesn’t wanna pay Jimmy Butler for his age 36+ contract. Golden State hasn’t come to an agreement with Kuminga, who shows all star potential.

The trade:

Jimmy Butler
for
Jonathan Kuminga, Andrew Wiggins, Gary Payton, ‘25 1st (lotto protected)

GSW:
Steph / Buddy / Jimmy / Draymond / Looney
Melton / Podz / Looney / SloMo / TJD

Miami:
Rozier / Robinson / Wiggins / Kuminga / Bam
Herro / Burks / Jaquez/ Jovic / Love
Richardson / Ware

I like it for both sides. I think Miami should get another pick since they get to overpay Kuminga. But it solves both teams main problem. So it’s a decent framework for a trade, IMO

If a deal were to happen it would probably look something like this. It doesn't really work to be paying both Butler and Kunminga' s next contracts so trading one for the other works better than trying to make that work. Ideally Butler would sign a deal to match Curry's length.

GS wasn't willing to trade a bunch of future 1sts post Curry for Lauri, but Butler's age lowers his value so that Kunminga + 1 1st should be enough.

Yeah, this is my take. I like Kuminga but his potential contract scares me. I'd want another pick or maybe no protections on the 25.

Either way, that's the type of deal it would take IMO.

Miami will always be good enough to contend with Butler and Bam on the roster and Spoelstra at the helm.

In any case, that's a terrible return for the Heat. Kuminga is still a bad shooter with an uncertain future and Wiggins is bad salary.

This would probably improve the Warriors, but Butler and Draymond are an awful fit.

GSW:
Steph / Buddy / Jimmy / Draymond / Looney

This is a very minor point in the context of the larger discussion, but Draymond would need to play center in this lineup. Two shooters is most certainly not going to cut it.

Miami:
Rozier / Robinson / Wiggins / Kuminga / Bam

Miami gets to be a bad team but not bad enough to be high in the lottery.

Wiggins contract will begin to improve greatly. Sadly he lost his father and that had to be weighing on him heavily as family issues were cited many times as part of his problems.

Without sounding callous this at least resolves the turmoil.

Miami will always be good enough to contend with Butler and Bam on the roster and Spoelstra at the helm. The Heat also don't own their 2025 and 2027 1sts, so getting significantly worse now makes absolutely no sense for them.

Miami gets to be a bad team with no first-round pick.

You’re not accounting for the fact that Miami may lose (or let go) Jimmy after this season, when he’s a likely Free Agent.

GSW are within $500k of the 1st Apron hard cap. They can't add $6M to their payroll without dumping salary. Since this trade knocks them down to 12 players, it looks difficult. IOW, this trade can't happen.

who even makes plays for that new Heat lineup? Trying to force Bam into a Jokic/Sabonis role? As a division rival who owns a future Miami pick, I think they should try this for the next 4 years

I despise this for GS. Doesn’t make them a contender and they give up real assets for an old injury prone player on the down slide.
If they really wanted to do it definitely no pick involved, and I would have pick going the other way.

If I were a Hornets fan I would never want the Heat to trade Butler lol

I like the general concept of Butler to GS for Kuminga and other stuff. But mechanically, it's very difficult to pull off (especially late in the offseason when most, if not all, teams have already used their cap space).

Miami is over the first apron, which means they can't add salary.

GS is hard-capped at the first apron and only has about $500k in wiggle room with 14 players under contract.

I think Riley is going to run it back and simply lose Butler in FA next year. I think he is too old to make a rebuild move of this caliber.

I doubt the Heat do something this bad.

It's unlikely the Warriors will trade Kuminga.

People seem concerned about paying 21 year old Kuminga? How about 35 year old oft-injured Butler?

I think the OP is very interesting. Butler is a great player but you could easily find yourself paying him a 4 year max for one more run at a ring…and I’m not even sure he fits as an up and down, never high-volume floor spreader. I also value Wiggins for a rebound, especially as a bit of a throw-in. It could work out very well for either or both teams …I’m just saying I disagree with those suggesting that MIA should get more or hang up.

You're free to disagree, but Wiggins is not seen as a good contract by anyone. Part of this is them paying to get off of that deal. And then we have to pay Kuminga which explodes our cap sheet. That's where the problem lies. The one piece worth keeping is going to push us into the second apron because of Wiggins. We'd need a second first just to get off of Wiggins...

I think you can get off him for one with the right team. Maybe Dallas or some other team desperately needing a 3+D wing should be included here. I suspect that, as unfortunate and sad as it is, there will be less mental and emotional energy for Wiggins in trying to take care of his father. Death can be like that. So, I think there is a reasonable chance he is better this year, even if he's not some homerun. I think someone would roll the dice (Dallas, LAL, etc.).

Maybe, but Miami shouldn't be paying to do it. Kuminga, a first, and expiring deals seems like what Miami would need
