Can we get him for the late-4th it cost to get Lance? If so, I'd at least consider it. I haven't scouted Bryce specifically, but he was the first pick for a reason, and was thrust into a pretty awful situation. You can rehabilitate guys like that in some cases, depending on the reason for their struggles. That said, it's relatively rare.

The problem is that a lot of guys can't see the game the way they need to. That is probably the single greatest issue for a lot of these physically talented players who bust. The college game is much simpler, so it's hard to determine what a guy can see. That's the single biggest issue with Lance. It's just not there. You can improve some of the physical things, especially accuracy (though sticking with Lance, he hasn't, really) and arm strength (a bit). But if you can't read a defense in real time, you almost certainly can't play in the NFL unless you are a supremely talented athlete.

Is that the reason that Bryce failed? I have no idea. I don't know that I've seen him play in the NFL, and if I saw him in college, it was probably just once. I know he's not a physical specimen the way many high picks are. But if a baseline vision and understanding aren't there, that's a really tough thing to markedly improve upon.

Just don't see how we can call Lance a bust after 2 regular season games & Bryce a bust after 1 season with an incompetent organization. It took Alex Smith 6 years to develop into what he was.

First off Alex Smith was absolutely a bust. Did you forget that he was drafted #1 overall?

Was Alex a colossal bust like a Jamarcus Russell or Tim couch, no. But just because he eventually became a semi passable QB, doesn't mean he wasn't a bust.

Alex Smith's style of play made Garoppolo look like a Brett Favre type of gunslinger. Smith absolutely earned his "captain checkdown" moniker. In KC he went the entire 2014 season without throwing a TD pass to a WR. He constantly went underneath to the RB's and TE's. Think about how incredible of a stat that is, an entire NFL season where a team had ZERO TD catches from a WR.

Its also pretty ironic that someone who incessantly bags on Purdy, puts a shine on Alex Smith. Purdy was better from his first career start, than Smith ever was.

Oh, and its far from guaranteed that Lance or Young have even an Alex Smith type of renaissance. Young would be the better bet to make in that regard.

Speaking of Young. How about the renaissance f the other "Young" that we had? Freaking Steve Young. He came over as a highly touted pick from an incompetent organization and we turned him into gold. The precedent is there. You'd have to think that Kyle could do the same thing with Bryce.

Re: Smith, it’s important to note that he blew out his shoulder and then completely **** it up by playing through the injury. That coupled with honestly some of the worst coaching we’ve ever seen, and terrible surrounding talent, and I find it hard to assess his career as bust or not. Obviously Rodgers would have been much better, but at the time of the draft their arms were considered comparable. The difference later owes at least as much to Smith’s shoulder as Rodgers technical improvement. Not saying he was ever destined to be amongst the best throwers ever the way Rodgers is, but I think his ceiling was a lot higher than what his best ended up being.

It’s pretty ironic that Brock critics are raising Smith as a reason to move off him when Smith himself has said that Brock is the same kind as him only better.

If you trade for Byrce, you don't need Purdy anymore. Let the billionaire Tepper give Purdy his gucci bag since he paid a stubborn HC a 62 mil contract to leave college coaching along with his infamous southern style rudimentary rah rah program that his own players think was a joke.

Then Kyle can keep all his playmakers which is key to reaching the SB. Purdy sadly will struggle in Carolina just like he was during preseason but he will be filthy rich while Bryce will play like this against the Chiefs in the SB!

This guy and the importance of preseason for an established NFL QB.
Yet im not the one willing to lose Deebo and possibly more just so the last pick in the draft gets a record setting gucci bag.

Those are normally meant for the top overall pick of the draft otherwise why draft them?

I would keep Deebo then forced to lose him like you sadly are.

I agree! The power of the Young name for QB is legendary. Even Vince Young was destined for greatness until he imploded by turning into a mega Diva queen.

Imagine Purdy winning a game like this? DeMeco Ryans was also in this game so he knows the greatness of the Young name!

Actually, Steve Young got drafted into an entirely different league, the USFL. He played 2 seasons in that league. That league folded after Young's 2nd season.

Steve Young entered the NFL via a supplemental draft created specifically for USFL players.

Young then spent 2 seasons floundering with one of the worst NFL teams in history.

Young then spent 4 seasons as Joe Montana's backup. Which means, Young had 4 years of study under one of the best to ever do it.

Steve Young was 30 years old before he was given the keys to the 49ers.

Steve Young, and his career arc is the definition of an outlier. Other than sharing a last name, there are no precedents or parallels to be made in relation to Steve Young and Bryce Young.

To make a valid claim of an existing precedent, you need to find an example of a very high draft pick who was a complete bust at his first stop, then transformed into a high end QB immediately after getting to his 2nd stop.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of one of those situations.

Speaking of Steve Young, here are some of his thoughts on Brock Purdy...

https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/181763-steve-young-elite-49ers-better/

Steve Young: ‘Elite’ 49ers QB Brock Purdy will only get better

"But as far as playing quarterback in the NFL, if you wanna be good, you gotta be a great processor, and the dude is elite, and that's not going to change. He's going to be challenged, and especially if he loses some talent, if [WR] Brandon [Aiyuk] doesn't sign, but they've got so many guys, and that's what you need in the NFL.

"You need a lot of help at quarterback. When you get a lot of help, you get good really fast."

Young has no qualms about labeling Purdy as "elite."

"He is [elite]," Young declared. "Processing, a lot of times, is experience as well. He's not as experienced as others, but as far as the ability to take the ball and then process through, find the truth in the play, and get the ball out to it, it's as good as it gets.

"He doesn't go from the last pick in the draft to being one of the better players without having something very special. And the special part of him is this processing power that he has."

Brees, arguably. But he was very good his last season in SD.

Brees was also a 2nd round pick, who didn't play at all in his rookie season.

Brees was probably even better in his 2nd to last year as a Charger. Was a pro bowler that year, which isn't an amazing achievement but still notable.

If I recall, the main reason why San Diego decided to move on from him was that scary throwing shoulder injury he suffered. At the time, it was considered career threatening. Because of his shoulder, I believe the Saints were the only team willing to offer Drew any guaranteed money on a free agent contract.

But yeah, Brees is probably as close to an example that exists. Still, Brees was far from a total bust in his 1st stop, as he showed a good amount of promise.

No but he is better than this QB all day long before his career is over. You cannot change a zebra his spots.

And Byrce on a loaded 49ers will be the next Steph Curry on a loaded Warriors during his prime. Just about every team wanted to trade for Byrce, even for a 1st round pick after he got benched but Tepper turned them down.

Brock played GREAT. With mostly 3rd stringers.
