January 25th the Knicks blew out the Nuggets with Sims as the starting center and Precious as the backup. .. That's kind of encouraging.
OG is a menace. He had 26 points and 6 steals that game. A healthy OG is the second best player on this team.

The way i'm choosing to view it is:
Would you rather have Mikal Bridges and be thin at C?
or
Would you rather have some league average starting C and all of our picks still without Mikal?
I think option A is still a better option for this iteration of the Knicks. Mikal/OG/Hart/Deuce gives you a relatively solid floor defensively IMO even if we may lack reliable size on the front line.
I just think, generally, people are underestimating how good our top 10 as a whole is compared to the rest of the league. We're just going to overwhelm some teams with 48 minutes of good rotation level guys at most of the positions on the floor. DDV was oen of the best shooters in the league last year. He would start on most teams that aren't finals contenders. He MAYBE gets 20-25 minutes a night on this team. Deuce who we all raved about as a great backup is going to have to fight for minutes just to get in the rotation.
Imagine you're an opposing shot creating wing and for 48 minutes all you see is one of OG/Mikal/Hart. Hell even Mook and Donte can give wings fits defensively. Like yes, C is a problem but it's a problem amongst like 99 other great things about this roster
Option B. But I don't think this team is a true contender with Mikal.
I disagree but it's certainly fair to view it that way.
My only counterpoint would be if the team knows they can extend Mikal instead of him taking more money through FA, then that trade makes even more sense because you have Brunson and Mikal both on discounts from what they would get on the open market. Given the CBA constraints while you might not be the outright favorite now, down the line you may back into it because teams like Boston, Philly, Dallas etc. are going to find it hard to keep their cores together.
I don't think there were many other trade targets who came with that same kind of perk.
Frankly I’m less concerned about the C position. It will be a little rough potentially through this season but eventually they will get a capable, durable guy who plays hard. If it becomes a real issue and you need to move Hart or DDV to balance the roster that’s a business decision for the future.
I’m more concerned about Randle/getting a #2 scorer/creator

Sims and Achiuwa will step up. These guys can protect the paint, and both of them can guard the perimeter on switches much better than Mitch and both are better on offense.
We should be ok, we have enough talent where the center doesn’t have to be a star, just fill a role and compliment the other players.

I'm sold.
Precious and Sims will put up career numbers at Center this year for the Knicks and surprise everyone.

We can get away in the regular season with PF playing as center with the rebounding power we've got out of role players, but god damn, we gotta trade this guy mid-season for the playoffs. We are not getting anywhere without center in 2025. If you look at the top 10 best players in the League - Jokic, Giannis, Embiid, Luka, SGA, Lebron and Brunson and only Curry, Tatum and Durant are perimeter first threats.
We are not living in 2017.

Wow. Here we are. Convincing ourselves that Precious/Sims is a good thing. I love me some Precious! Getting OG as filler in that trade was awesome!
Sims though? He is gonna have to take a leap.
I won't worry about health though. Precious was playing 48mpg for like 3 months!
Brunson/Deuce
Bridges/DDV
OG/Hart
Randle
Precious/Sims
We are a small ball team by default at this point. Maybe we play better that way? Hope so. Makes more sense why Thibs was discussing Randle at the 5 now. He knew Mitch wasn't going to be ready and Shart left us at the altar.

Walk me through this thought process. We are losing depth immediately so, what is the upside?

They can switch better on the perimeter, Precious can hit free throws and has offense Mitch doesn’t which will open the floor more for Randle and Brunson.
Defensive rotations will be insane with these guys and any combination of OG, Mikal,Josh and Dante.

Julius is our low post threat, he finally figured out that his strength is bullying his way to the basket and either finishing or finding the open man, now with better shooters surrounding him.

I'm high on Precious and I think most people are overlooking him because they still feel the burn of I-Quitinstein.

He’s good but just based on size alone he doesn’t bring the rim protection that Mitch/Ihart gave.
Also, the real plus of the Mitch/Ihart/Sims trio was that it gave the Knicks 18 hard fouls to give before they had to play it “safe” on defense from the center position. It being just Sims and Precious is far from ideal, and I think they are going to struggle defensively against teams who are going to hunt for fouls against Sims and Precious.
The good news is we have guys who can guard at the wing and perimeter to make that harder to do, but whenever the foul issue does happen the Knicks are going to be in for a bad night.
