Honestly I expected a bunch of people to complain about Tatum over SGA when I posted this thread. In other recent threads and polls on RGM it seems like SGA has been ranked higher.

That said, they are 4 months apart in age and Tatum is so much more tested and accomplished...

Spoiler:

I can understand peeps who like SGA over Tatum, but for the versatility, track record and upside, I’d go Tatum still.

I still can’t see why they think White is the 5th option? Must have not been watching the last couple years.

Luka is the best scorer in the NBA, followed by Embiid and then a very large gap between them and everyone else. Jokic is efficient, but he's not a good scorer. He picks his shots carefully to increase his efficiency rather than focusing on volume and dominance.

Jokic is probably a better scorer than Doncic and his passing gets largely unlocked by his ability to draw double teams from the post i.e., from the threat he poses as a scorer.

Jokic averaged only 0.2 fewer points than Doncic in the 2024 playoffs (28.7 vs 28.9) (ranked 8th). His TS% was 62.5 vs Doncic's 55.6.

He averaged 30 ppg in the 2023 playoffs (ranked 5th).

31 ppg in the 2022 playoffs (ranked 3rd).

These are prime Kobe numbers, but on elite efficiency.

Your argument is pretty baseless, I'm sorry.

If we're comparing playoffs, we should note that Doncic averaged 0.2 more points per game with a injured knee than healthy Jokic. Thats very important context. We see the real difference in the regular season when they're healthy.

And on much lower efficiency, as usual.

As for the year prior, Doncic didn't make the playoffs.

If we look back two years ago, Jokic averaged 31.0 in 5 games, Doncic 31.7 in 15 games, so fairly close, and both on high volume, except the gap in efficiency was again significant with a 64.3 TS% for Jokic and 57.7 for Doncic.

But again we can debate who the better scorer is but the whole premise of your argument was that Jokic is not a great scorer and not even a first option, which is (sorry) utterly absurd especially when you consider those numbers.

you’d think with the amount of die hard basketball fans we have on here especially randle’s playoff struggles would be looked at more crtitically. his first appearance there he was leading a let’s face it talent challenged knicks squad where his 2nd most reliable option was a now retired derrick rose.. that hawks team was clearly head and shoulders better talent wise on paper. they loaded up on him and dared anyone else to beat him. he’s admittedly also probably not suited to be a number 1 option on a real contender, more like 2nd or 3rd. his second appearance was one he probably really shouldn’t have even been playing in. he was questionable before every game damn near and needed ankle surgery immediately after that playoff ended. it sounds like excuses but those are the facts of the situation. i’m really interested to see what he can do with this current squad if god willing he goes into the playoffs healthy this coming year

Tatum above sga as a #1 option is laughable.

When someone says first option they usually mean who do you want to taking a shot in a close game? Jokic isn't a guy you'd be comfortable doing that. He's not a big game scorer, although he can occasionally put up points. I think this is:

1. Luka
2. Shai
3. Embiid
4. Curry
5. Brunson

I could see 3-5 being switched in any order although 1-2 is inarguable.

lol are you serious? Jokic averages 28 a game in the playoffs, dude is without question the #1 option on his team.

Jokic then Embiid then Luka then SGA followed by Ja or Curry

People having anyone ahead of Jokic are crazy

And Embiid is actually a better more efficient scorer than Luka plain and simple

And I love Giannis but he is so limited

The NINTH best 2nd option is ranked "so high"?

He could be overrated, but not on this list...

The Blazers list is insanity. Sharpe not in Blazers top 5? Scoot 3rd option over Deni? Of course Scoot is last as 3rd options, because he isn’t our 3rd best player. Deni is certainly better than some of those bottom 3rd option players.

Looks like Knicks upgraded their second option from 14th to 8th..

So they posted a new final ranking of rosters after the KAT-Randle trade. The move takes the Knicks from the 14th best starting lineup to the 4th best. So a substantial improvement. Wolves fall only 1 spot from 2nd the 3rd.

I think the clear brow raiser here is Tatum over Shai. I think it’s clearly the other way around at least.

I just skimmed but a few of the rankings make literally no sense if someone watches basketball ... very very random but for example for the "5th option" you got Aaron Nesmith ranked #25 ... The ranking clearly factors in defense, but even w/o that there's no rational argument for guys like Huerter, Terrance Mann, Finney-Smith, Huerter, Nurkic, Jovic, Ryu, Christian Braun over him - like wtf? Especially after how he played in last years playoffs and his 50/42/78 split during the season.

It's minor but if you're that wrong on some players, the whole list becomes trash in my opinion because it shows the person/people that made it don't really know basketball.

Does Lebron still have an argument as a top 5 first option? The only guys I'm taking him over for sure are Jokic, Luka and Giannis. You can argue Embiid, but Lebron last year at age 39 had a more efficient playoff run than any Embiid playoff. But even if you give the 4th spot to Embiid, you would be left with guys like Brunson/Ant/Tatum/SGA/Curry/KD for the fifth spot. I'm not sure I'm taking any of those guys over Lebron even at this age.

“Big game scorer” Joel Embiid in the playoffs:

24.9ppg on 58% TS (59 games)

Non-big game scorer Nikola Jokic in the playoffs:

27.7ppg on 62% TS (80 games)

If Jokic is only “occasionally” putting up points what the hell is Embiid doing?

Was availability factored in for Embiid as a 1st option. There's no rational explanation to rate Tatum over embiid. He'll i wouldn't rate any of them over embiid when he's healthy.
