It’s a slight overpay probably, but 15-16 per year is about the going rate for good role players the last couple of years. Team option in 3rd year would have been better value wise. Clippers would not have been able to retain Zu or Mann with PG I believe. I just think Mann at more like 11-13 per year would have been more ideal.

Clippers have been treating him as a near max player in trade talks the past several years so it's an underpayment from THEIR standards lol.

He’s a frustrating guy lately IMO. He’s got the tools NOW to be a poor man’s Iggy. He’s an absurd 80% rim finisher and 40% from 3. The problem? His brain. He’s always so quick to defer to stars and other guys. Which leads to him passing up a **** load of wide open 3s and cuts for dunks.
If the Clippers are smart they will hammer him all year on taking more shots and driving. He also went from an amazing rebounder for his size per minute 2020-2022 to a bad one last two years. If I’m coaching him I’m on him 24/7 about 3s, rim attacks and rebounding.

Guy is about to turn 28 but gets treated like he's 22... dudes a nice role player and that's about it. A poor man's Josh Hart lol

I mean this is when players typically hit peak. 27-29 ish. It’s up to him to take a leap, but like I said he’s shown some great flashes. People don’t realize he’s not 22 probably because he didn’t get drafted until he was 23.

Haha, I haven't followed the Clipper trade talks too closely in the past ccouple of years. I do remember reports that Mann was"untouchable" in the Harden trade. I, like others at the time IIRC, found the concept of Mann being "untouchable" hillarious, but I thought maybe the Clippers were poorly communicating the fact that they had no interest in including Mann in a trade for Harden, as they knew they could get it done without.
Was he valued that highly in other trade talks as well?

He guarded Luka as well as anyone in the 2024 playoffs. I get Luka was banged up, but still for a 6’4 guard to do that shows why a versatile role player is vital. He also is a league leading rim finisher and knock down 3 point shooter.
People are big on him because when he’s attacking he’s one of the best role players in the league. The problem with him is he’s passive a lot of times and needs to not defer so much to “stars”.

Re: Shams: Terance Mann re-signs with the Clippers for 47/3.
Regarding the value of this contract, it's a pretty interesting case.
You rarely have a player that's already 27, gets a good amount of minutes, while playing that efficiently contribute so little in terms of volume.
But you also rarely have team that has such a combination of that many perimeter threats AND ball dominant guards as the Clippers did last year.
It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. He isn't good enough as a defender or playmaker to warrant that contract while providing so little offensively even with his efficiency. It doesn't mean he's a bad player, but it's just the reality of it; In today's league, you need more offensive output in a non-elite defensive player if he's going to play 25 minutes a game.
BUT, if there is a solid plan to feature him in the offense, he has shown enough that it wouldn't be surprising to see him take an offensive jump. And for today's prices, this isn't this outragous figure for a significant rotation piece on a playoff contending team. And there is no doubt that the Clippers had too many cooks in the kitchen last year, something that's clearly changed now.

The most likely scenario is his efficiency would fall off a cliff if you bumped his usage rate up closer to 20%.

He didn't bet on himself. He should have forced the Clippers to pay him more or suffer losing him. He should have forced the Clippers to pay him like a starter. He could have received this contract on the open market.

This seems about right for what he's shown. He does have potential to be better so this could work out really well for Clips.

The Value Of A Past
Here's my question to all those who think Mann should have gotten a lesser deal: are you judging it on the basis of his career high 39-point game in the 2021 NBA Playoffs that gave the team their first ever series win vs. Jazz (they have lost to them three times in 1992, 1997 and 2017) and completed a double 2-0 comeback to make their first ever conference finals appearance? Do you think Clippers mistakenly paid him "savior's money," as in they see him as a savior because of that career high game?
My take is this: analysts are taking too much stock in that comeback. Clippers paid him too much because they owe him for that comeback. Is that what I'm getting here?

Last year, the Clips had three go-to players that demanded the ball 95% of the time. With George leaving, his many shots will get distributed amongst the other players. Guys like Mann will become more aggressive and get more shots up as a result.
I think he was extended either to trade him with Tucker for a PF or because he is being relegated to the bench in favor of KPJ.

It's fine and with the cap going up he'll be tradable, but I'm not sure I like the Clippers closing doors with their cap space like this. Zubac is on an expiring deal and needs to get paid as well. Harden has a P.O. next summer.

If he stays at his current level, this is a market level deal.
If he grows some cajones and looks to score more, which I'm positive he can, then this is gonna be a damn good deal.
He can guard 1-3, a good amount of modern 4s and put 39 on Gobert (lol obviously hyperbole there). Versatile to be a secondary handler and facilitator. Good defender. Good fundamentally.
See him being the 6th man this year, except the 58 games Kawhi misses, where he'll start with James, Porter, Jones and Zu.

Zu already got his extension (18/19.5/21).
I'm just surprised they gave both Mann and Zu the guaranteed third year, and not a 2+team option kind of move to match with Kawhi's expiring year.

I misread this as him getting 47 a year and I was flabbergasted.

Lol who would have given him this contract on the open market? This is above the MLE, so you are talking about very limited options in terms of teams with actual cap space. Like I said in an earlier post, it’s interesting to see how it’ll play out, and this could go a few ways for the clippers; but for Mann, considering the market and his output last year, you have to take contract.
A 27 year old(almost 28) who has only averaged only over 10+ points once in his career despite getting pretty significant minutes should not be betting on themselves right now when 48m on the table, with a good opportunity to get exposure and play a big role on a big market playoff contending team.
Seriously which team would have given him that deal?
It’s a solid deal for both sides in this market. Cost is worth the potential reward for the clippers, and this is a no brainer for Mann.
