Knicks Acquire Karl-Anthony Towns From Wolves For Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo
The New York Knicks have agreed to a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves of Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo and a first round pick via the Detroit Pistons for Karl-Anthony Towns. The Knicks will also send DaQuan Jeffries and draft compensation to the Charlotte Hornets to facilitate the trade.
The two sides intensified discussions on a deal over the past 24 hours. The Knicks have long been linked with Towns, but were set to enter the season particularly thin at center following the free agent departure of Isaiah Hartenstein and the injury to Mitchell Robinson.
Towns is entering Year 1 of his four-year, $220 million supermax extension with a $49.3 million salary this season. During the 23-24 season, Towns averaged 21.8 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 32.7 minutes. Towns also previously played for Tom Thibodeau and was represented by Leon Rose until the agent left CAA to run the Knicks. Towns' camp was reportedly "stunned" by the trade to the Knicks.
Randle is on a $28.9 contract this season with a player option for 25-26 worth $30.9 million. According to Ian Begley, the Knicks also discussed Randle trade scenarios with the Pistons, Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat.
DiVincenzo signed a four-year, $50 million contract with the Knicks during the 2023 offseason and had a career season with 15.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists while shooting 40.1 percent from three.

Love that Minnesota trade for us.
Thanks Knicks.
That was an unexpected trade I would have to guess behind closed doors Towns asked out of Minny and they honored it.

Re: The Official 2024 Offseason Thread Part 3
Knicks are super interesting now
In a way both teams moved on from their "headache", Wolves don't have to figure out if Ant and KAT can work long term and Knicks don't have to decide if they want to pay Randall or not. But if I was the Wolves, I wouldn't have made this move if I didn't have to.

I kind of think this trade is bad for both teams.
SHAZAM!
Suns traded Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder and 4 1st round picks and a swap so some Vegas Bookies would like us.

Yeah, I think the same.
Both teams surpassed expectations last year and (on paper) were on the right path to repeat a successful season.
All the talk about the Villanova guys together and they separate them before training camp lol.

Yep. Minnesota has no real good (volume) outside shooting now in their starting 5, and inside just got more clogged up. NY only has MitchRob as a real C and he is injured more than not. I hope OG will enjoy playing 5 for 48 minutes a night for Thibs
(That being said, NY will still be a really good and intresting team)

Re: The Official 2024 Offseason Thread Part 3
Not me imo this trade was worse for Minny and makes no sense unless Kat asked out or they just want out of the contract.
Knicks should be at least top 3 in the East next season.

Re: The Official 2024 Offseason Thread Part 3
I think Minnesota won this trade in a big way. I have always liked Randall and DiVincenzo. They get a great shooter in DiVincenzo and a big that can pass and score. Randall can contribute in many ways. I think he will be a better fit alongside Gobert. Add a first round pick via the Pistons, I think the Wolves did just fine.
The Wolves are going to be tough for us. I guess Towns may help the Knicks but when he was the Wolves starting center they sucked.

I never liked Towns game, he is feast or famine for me. I dont like 7 footers playing like 2 guards.

Depends on how you use Randle. If you can get him to be more of a 2 man game threat differing to Ant then it could work.

Re: The Official 2024 Offseason Thread Part 3
The biggest thing for the Wolves is being able to utilize Naz Reid more efficiently. DD is great too when they were lacking scoring from their wings since Jaden McDaniels can be streaky. Wolves got a little deeper, and obviously are building around Ant.
The Knicks I feel will be an interesting team regardless. Their entire engine runs off of Jalen Brunson's energy, so it will be interesting to see how the team will work with KAT there. I'll definitely be tuning into the Knicks games this year. Also... they got that one Suns player that everyone here seems to talk about all the time.

Seems a luxury tax move.
Randle isn't even contracted past this year and hard to see him fitting next to Gilbert in Minnesota out of all places.

Thought for a moment Knicks have done another trade to fill the void at C position.

Still can't believe what TWolves did.
Trade 2nd best player to save tax.
Imagine if we traded Devin Booker for Dejonte Murray for cap relief.

KAT definitely is an upgrade but losing DDV hurts their depth, defense and shooting. Also KAT is injury prone, and so does OG and Mitchell Robinson so it's a little scary without some reliable frontcourt depth going into the season

The 2005-06 Suns will always have a special place in my heart
