It’s what simpleton fans and media from other markets think.
EDIT: Sorry, that was a knee-jerk response to a legitimate concern you may have. Let me give you a better answer.
National media spreads this story because they don’t like Towns antics. He has had some bad games in previous play offs where the moment was a bit to big for him (as has Ant). I think they magnify it because of Towns histrionics on foul calls. It should make you feel better that Towns has worked on that, and received zero technical fouls all last year.
Offensively Towns is a tough match up, and I doubt anyone thinks he’s soft. He still flails his arm too much, but he can bang in the post and shoot threes on the perimeter. Defensively, he was mislabeled soft for years because he was bad at drop coverage. It wasn’t that he was soft against his man, and he always put up good numbers in opponents FG% at the rim, and he was always a very good rebounder. The problem was that KAT would break drop coverage to rush out to meet the many opponents who got around the Wolves porous perimeter defense, and those guys would make an additional pass to a cutter, with Towns out of position. The last three years, Finch has played KAT out from under the rim, where he likes to be, and he’s been an above average defender.

He’s whiny, not soft. You’ll be surprised how good his defense is compared to what you read on the general board or hear from Kendrick Perkins.

Important note is that this is true for blitz/switching/high-wall defensive actions. If Tom Thibodeau puts him back in drop-action, Karl-Anthony Towns goes from a good-to-excellent defensive player to one the the worst defensive big men in the NBA. He cannot be deployed in drop-action, it's a disaster that Tom Thibodeau hopefully learned from (but it's Thibs, so we'll see).

Re: **The Official Karl-Anthony Towns Thread: Part Two**
I still can't believe KAT's not a Twolf anymore. I sorta understand why he was traded. But it still feels bad inside, he was a great person and a great teammate. Always took the high road to integrate teammates, willingly stepped aside so his teammates can get the spotlight. Not to mention, the myriad of communities and awareness he helped socially. Lots of positive things to say for KAT as a person. The fact that a lot of fans are against it initially speaks volume of how much they cared for KAT whether as a player or as a person. It's rare to find that player that loyal to a team (never asked out) and to think it's to Minnesota of all places. For a long time, KAT was one of the few or lone beacon of hope in a myriad of losing seasons. I'm glad he was a Twolf and I'm glad I was able to see him become the best shooting big man in the league.
The way we all found out and the way he found out too is just gutting. It really took everyone by surprise. This felt like the KG trade for me, in that it was sad to see the player go. But I'm still a fan of the team first and that doesn't stop me for cheering KAT to do well on the Knicks (like I did for KG on Boston). Here's to hoping we get a MIN-NYK finals this season.
I'm gonna miss KAT. I hope one day down the line he gets back to this team before he retires like KG and make it a full circle.

Missing KAT already.
Game 7 win against Denver was a top 2 moment in Timberwolves history (still might have Game 7 against the Kings as #1).
That Ant + KAT postgame interview was special.
Gonna miss you, Big Purrr.

From what I just read, I think they'll be switch-heavy. And that makes a ton of sense, with wings like Anunoby, Bridges and Hart.

They have to protect Towns and Brunson. It will require a lot of teamwork

So cool that he's still wearing Wolves gear even after being traded to the Knicks. I'm sure in NY he'll be wearing Knicks gear.

Soft as Flex Seal. But in a good way.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

Click on the X and you will feel like crying after watching the vids and reading the comments. We don't live in a perfect world. In a perfect world KAT would have been a lifetime Timberwolf. I'll be gloriously happy if/when we win a title, but it will be incomplete because KAT wasn't here for it.
