Randle to Atlanta

Post#1 » by Saul Goodman » Sun Sep 29, 2024 4:18 am

To Atlanta
Julius Randle

To Minnesota
Larry Nance JR
Bogdan Bogdonavic

Atlanta has no pick so no incentive to be bad. Randle can be an interesting experiment next to Randle for the next season.

Minnesota adds to their depth and makes the KAT trade make sense getting two good rotation players.

Don't see this for Minny. They did need an extra perimeter option (especially if NAW could be ignored on offense in the playoffs) but they just got DDV. I don't think they need him and Bogs. Meanwhile Nance is a downgrade from Randle.

I think you're supposed to offer reasoning for both teams.

I’m a big Randle fan and think the hawks are more interesting than people expect them to be, but I don’t like the fit here.

Hawks have put a lot of long off ball guys around Trae this year, and that’s the way to go. Whereas I think Randle will surprise people with how well he fits with Wolves.

Seems like Minny likes Randle? I don’t see them doing this.

Hawks have already declined Randle when the Knicks reached out.

This is one of the biggest questions for me, and one we’ll probably have to wait until next summer to know! I’m sure we’re going to hear lots of platitudes from the Wolves front office when the trade is finally completed, and Chris Finch has some experience with Randle in NOP.

That said, Randle also could be masquerading as a guy that doesn’t dramatically reduce your play off chances when you lose KAT, but who’s true value is as an expiring. After two decades, MIN finally has a contender, so trading Towns now for lesser players could get fans to start grabbing their torches! Maybe Minny likes Randle, but I know they like Naz Reid, and this may just be a palatable way to get off Towns money, and give some of it to Naz next summer.

I'm certainly rooting for Julius to carve out a longterm spot for himself out west the way ZBo did so many years ago...only as a much better player...but that makes a lot of sense. Could definitely be a bit of a trial period for them, where they can test out how Julius' playmaking and ability to draw double teams changes things. As well as seeing how Naz does in an expanded role.

...especially early in the campaign; while Randle finds his rhythm after another season that ended with a surgery and builds chemistry with your non-Divo shooters.

Atlanta does have extra picks via the Murray trade, but I understand why they might not want to use them on this kind of trade.

The general concept of a more talented player for two better fitting pieces type of move does make some sense.

Atlanta has Jalen Johnson at the 4. Doesn’t fit at all.

JJ could play the 3 next to Julius and be just as beastly, kid already takes the toughest perimeter assignment regardless of position & Julius would find him for tons of open 3s. It's the Julius / Trae fit I don't like.

I think you need to lean into the heliocentric stuff with Trae and surround him with bigger guys who thrive off the ball...as you've done this offseason...and though Julius's streaky shooting is respected by defenders what makes him so good is that he can just bully his way to the rim against anybody; while having very good vision to pass out of double teams before they get to him.

If Trae was a 40%+ 3pt shooter who had shown a knack for running around screen to get free, like Brunson, I'd feel completely differently about the fit. But given that Trae's strength is creating for his team-mates with the ball in his hands, JuJu is the wrong star big to try to pair Trae, Bogey, & JJ with.

The extra picks the Hawks acquired for Murray 'kind sorta' makes up for the unprotected picks owed to SAS so I don't see the Hawks giving them up for an expiring and a player they most likely won't resign with Jalen Johnson's upcoming extension.

Understand your point. But aren’t the Hawks +1 with tradable picks with the LAL 25 1st, Protected SAC 25 1st, and Pels 27?

We are +1, however the unprotected nature of the Hawks own picks plus the pick swap lessons the overall pick stash.

i mean, you don't trade KAT for just Donte DiVincenzo no matter how bad you need the cap relief. Whether you're a believer in Randle's impact as a player (and for the record, I'm not), there's no doubt Minny bought into it

I think Randle gets until the trade deadline to show how he fits with the Wolves. I can see a scenario where his 3pt shooting is adequate and his playmaking works. I can also see a scenario where his shooting is lacking, resulting in him being unable to be successful next to Gobert. Even if he ends up back on the market, I expect the Wolves to look to move him for a single player from the same talent tier not multiple lesser players.
