Re: Dikembe Mutombo passed away
Growing up in the 90s... this is sad and I'm in tears. His post career should shine even more than his playing career. The man speaks 7 languages, a kind heart and the greatest name of all time, "Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo".
Sheittt also forgot the greatest pick up line of all time, "WHO WANTS TO SEX MUTOMBO".

SelbyCobra wrote:I don't think "good" or "great" describes Dikembe Mutombo well enough as a person. He was a Hall of Fame basketball player, giving the NBA community one of it's most enduring images of all time when The Nuggets upset the Sonics, and yet he was 1000x the person off the court. If you didn't get a chance to see Mutombo play, it's unlikely you know what he's done with his time off the court since retirement, and what he's done with almost every last dollar he made in the NBA. To put it bluntly and in the appropriate formatting:
He might be the greatest athlete philanthropist/humantitarian in professional sports history.
His legacy is jaw-dropping, and he had a positive effect on MILLIONS of lives around the world due to his efforts to provide infrastructure, healthcare, and education to those that did not have it at even the most basic level, often using his own money to get projects off the ground so people could have what they needed. This isn't someone who used his celebrity to brighten days or being attention in the community on his off days or in the offseason, this is a man who over the decades quite literally prevented millions of people from suffering or dying by giving them water, food, medicine, shelter, and education.
To the sports world this is a hall of famer, a legend, a funny voice, an iconic finger wag, a meme. In the real world he was a literal savior. An absolute titan.

May I nominate this post as our official Knicks' RealGM eulogy to a great man.

I forgot he was ever a Knick. Why did they only keep him the one season?
There goes my hero. Watch him as he goes.

A great defender, a great warrior, a great humanitarian, and a classy guy through and through. Him rolling on the floor, clutching the first round playoff series-winning rebound against the top-seeded Sonics, is one of NBA's most iconic moments.
Eternal memory to a great man!

There was a stretch in the NBA (not just the Knicks), where every team had like 4 +7 footers just for the sake of having big men.
At least, that's how I remembered it.
Mutombo was also 37 years old that season. It was time to move on so we could focus on our future big men like Jackie Butler, Sweetney, Bruno Sundov, and Nazr Mohammed.

Re: Dikembe Mutombo passed away
I'll never understand it. Dude used his wealth to make life altering changes for people for the better. He wanted nothing in return. Yet he only gets 58 years here, whereas others with 1000x his money live selfishly and do nothing for anyone but themselves and they'll be breathing til they're 90.
Absolute crap. F*ck Cancer.
Good fight, Big Man.

he was getting older at that time. could still block shots with his timing and length but wasn't too mobile anymore.
