glad you're safe for the time being. i cant even imagine.

i don't even now how they begin to basically rebuild entire infrastructure - roads, power, water, bridges, dams, cables - for the entire southern appalachains. all those side roads up the valleys, all follow creeks, all probably washed away. so many people just stuck. one road in/out is gone.

Years to rebuild. My experience in Florida is relative to crews working in flat land/beaches, very symmetrical roadways. A lot of work to recover from, but a piece of cake compared to the twisted complexities of mountain roads. Look at Fort Myers Beach, still struggling after 2 years. When Ian hit, we knew it would take a long time to overcome the massive damage. We drove down through the town a couple of months afterward, and knew it was the last time we’d be there. Went through two major hurricanes living in Fort Myers. Decided to sell and move back to Missouri near our son and grands. But I know the mountains well, born and raised there. So many creeks, hollers and tucked away ridges. This was so horrible for all the region. Hope all our posters there are Ok.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Where I'm from (Far North East Coast of NSW, Australia) we had huge floods in late February 2022. Our local Council and contractors have repaired over 600 local roads and are still repairing a couple of the more complex landslips on roads in the mountainous, rural areas. It's going to be a huge job.

It probably couldn't have been accomplished without significant state and federal disaster funding grants.

That's Steve Collins, Eric's brother

No but seriously, I wonder if Eric is actually there, or they just have him call remote in some sort of 8k display imax super room. Because he could do a bunch of sports that way

Not trying to turn this into a political discussion..

But it is shocking to me that after 15 years of being inundated with cold war era levels of disinformation, and with everything we know about the use of AI, that there are still just massive chunks of the population that are still so easily susceptible to blatant disinformation attempts, and refuse to, or are incapable of taking 3 minutes to fact check. It's a real problem in this country and around the world. And it's sad and frustrating. And it's even more infuriating when it's used in the aftermath of such a horrible tragedy like what's happening in the mountains right now.

nope, not since 3am on the 27th
if my guestimate is correct, he lives somewhere between shelby and lake lure, maybe forest city area? not quite in mountains, but close enough for bad flooding. i'll send him an email. i have his email.

That's very worrisome. Lake Lure got absolutely devastated.

I'm not dead, sorry about not logging on for so long. My power was out until yesterday. Internet is still out. No idea when that'll be fixed. Typing this on phone.

As for the hurricane. Yeah. Yard was a river, literally.

A couple trees almost fell on my neighbors house but they missed. Smashed a fence through.

A few trees did land on thing's however. A big one fell across the road. Neighbors cut it and moved it with a little farming bulldozer. It's currently in a ditch. Between that and a bunch of other trees in the road, I couldn't leave my house at all for a while.

Another fell across a power line in my yard. It's still there. Because of the power being on I suspect that's an internet cable or something besides electricity.

Most sadly the tree the random chickens roost in somehow got split in half. But fear not, the chickens survived. They still roost in it as far as I can tell.

Besides that not much is happening now. The location fats guessed is fairly accurate.

Lake Lure got wrecked. Closed it off and evacuated people as far as I know. The dam broke. Chimney Rock got wiped out, or at least all the stores. Haven't been able to verify because of lack of internet. But someone showed me a tiktok.

Besides that, nothing much else to say. I'll try to pop back on later, but I won't be on regularly until the internet is back. I really dislike typing on phones.

I haven't checked my email in weeks. So don't worry if I don't open emails you've sent. I check when the internet is back.

I will never take power for granted ever again. Being out a week was brutal! I can't imagine 10+ days. Insane

I hope things on the Florida coast will be okay. You can't tell me global warming isn't a thing. These storms are nastier and nastier the warmer the ocean gets, and its proven than the oceans have gotten warmer.

anyone who denies climate change or global warming is a braindead zombie not worth arguing with.

I have a former friend who also has a degree in geography, but somehow is a climate change denier. Like I don't know how we could have received a degree in the same field, taken the same classes and have such polar opposite views. He's been completely brainwashed. Last time it came up he said "global warming isn't a thing, it's just that they paved everything with parking lots, which makes it hotter.". I didn't feel like trying to argue, but in my head I'm like - it doesn't matter how it happened, it's the fact that it's happening, which you just acknowledged, by dismissing it saying it's only getting hotter because there's more pavement. Even if that's the only reason, it's still supports the fact that the Earth is warming, and it's al least, partially due to human intervention.

It's the same morons that every year there's a cold streak in January and they go "I thought there was global warming", thinking that global warming only impacts the weather on a micro, day-to-day scale. The fact of the matter is the oceans are warming, and warmer oceans produce more storms and stronger storms. Increased temperatures also create more chaotic weather patterns, whether that's more hurricanes, more tornadoes, more drought, and gasp, more blizzards, believe it or not. Changes in ocean currents can have drastic impacts causing some places to get warmer some places to get colder.

I feel like they should revoke his geography degree for not understanding the very basics of climatology. Then again, he was always more interested in just memorizing capitals, as if that provides any value outside of answering Jeopardy questions.
