He's too smart to be a manager, so this is a no-brainer bringing in one of your own to run things and remove the Dodger leftovers. Four losing seasons in five years on the job, the Giants have higher expectations. Perfect hire at the right time.

I'll give it a C. A lot rides on the infrastructure he hires around him to balance out his inexperience in the front office. I don't like the decision to retain Bob Melvin though.

Melvin was a huge part of the problem with his overplaying vets, poor communication with young players and overseeing limited player development. The best decision the Padres made was getting rid of Melvin.
