How would they do in today's game?

Post#1 » by Brandon-Clyde » Tue Oct 1, 2024 2:06 am

We need some fun discussion on these boards so here's something.
How would these past players ( assume in their prime)do in today's game?
First three to start with
Terry Porter
Jerome Kersey
Kevin Duckworth

TP would be a solid combo guard, along the lines of Derek White.

Kersey would be something like Eason.

Duck would not have much of a role (Vooch level player)

I was hoping and expecting this to be one of the first replies. You did not disappoint. Jroy have it all.

Porter's value and role would be very similar. Not elite enough to carry a team but a very easy fit with pretty much any other perimeter star. Enough size to slide to SG if playing with a star PG, enough shooting and off the ball play to work with a playmaking wing, enough PG skills to work with a more pure scoring wing. I'd put a Jrue Holiday as a comparison (but healthier).

As a physical SF with poor (by current standards) shooting Kersey would likely be shifted down to play more PF. Still a credible 4th/5th starter.

Duckworth would be a non-descript backup center.

These types of things are so hard to speculate on...the game is very much different than it was 35 years ago. You have to factor in that much of what made those Blazer teams and players very good was their fit and how they complimented each other.

I think TP could be a starter on a good team. I agree that Kersey would likely end up as an undersized PF in today's NBA...a bit like a poorer shooting but more efficient Walker, but with much, much, much better positional defense.

I'm honestly not sure that Big Duck would get a first round contract in today's NBA. His positional defense was pretty dang good early on, but he was never really a rim protector, passer, or rebounder for his size.

EDIT: This OP had me go back and look a bit at the Blazers of yore. Memory is so strange...it seems impossible that Adleman only coached the team for 5 years, and Dunleavy only 4. It seemed like those guys were around forever...certainly more than Cheeks or Chauncey--but that's not the case.

I think Kersey would be great in today's game. Nobody expects that sort of defense anymore.

Clyde wasn't a pansy either, he'd do better than these current stars

Porter while still good would be a middle of the pack sort of guard imo

I could see Anderson as a Kemba Walker level player.
Cliff's game would fit very well in today's game.
Cooper would be a poor man's Myles Turner
