Re: KAT to Knicks Part 3
Smart rumors seem dumb (credit stuporman) in the current context.
Especially dumb that the Knicks would be trading a Smart-like defender FOR Smart, while also completely gutting their depth at PF and C.
This is either a pre-KAT trade discussion that is getting recycled POST KAT trade or
Knicks FO is leaking this prior interest to get a team like Charlotte or Utah or New Orleans to know they can move onto other options...maybe.

Knicks have always had an interest in Smart, rightfully so. Probably nothing close to happening though and more of just a thought kicked around as every decent player in the league probably gets kicked around

Agreed, it makes no sense at all.

Not even sure how a trade for Smart can work. He is making 20+ million. We are only a couple million below the 2nd apron which means we can’t combine salaries to get him.

We don't need Smart and trading away even more depth wouldn't be ideal imo. The roster is fine as it is UNLESS we find out later on that Mitch can't go or isn't the same. We will need a defensive C next to KAT in the playoffs against Philly.

Pain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It sucked seeing him shoot the lights out last night, but the Knicks seem to be banking on Deuce to make that leap. If he does, we probably won't miss Donte that much.

Mitch, Deuce and Pacome work.
I don't like it
I dunno if I like it either but for better or worse Knicks have been arguably overpaying for strategically fitting pieces of what they want around Brunson in Thibs scheme.
Smart is a DPOY level type defender who can actually play the 1 (McBride really isnt a 1)... If Knicks get him they would have a lockdown type lineup that the NBA has maybe never seen before.
You would have 3 guys that have DPOY type talent and a 4th in Hart who is not too far behind. Knicks want to take pressure off Brunson.

Donte has potential special talent shooting the 3 ball ...we WILL miss him. Hopefully McBride will mitigate that a bit.

Knicks have wanted a certain type of player behind Brunson for a while:
1. Strong defender
2. High level ball handler
3. High level distributor
4. Veteran and battle tested
Smart is all these things. He is a 2 or 3x DPOY player. Right now who is our back up 1 that fits all these things?
I am not necessarily advocating for this trade either. But I think they didn't like how much we had to rely on Brunson either. He is going to wear down with that kind of heavy usage.

It does make sense in the context I have presented. Not saying I agree or not but I can see their thinking behind it (if this rumor is in fact true).

I was the main one on here begging for us to sign Donte and to see him traded really sucks. Only if Randle and Mitch had more value around the league, I wouldn’t be in pain right now. I’m hoping Deuce really takes a leap or just continues to play like he did in the playoffs so I can fully enjoy this trade and not wonder what if.
Also, I’m against including Deuce in any trade for Smart. That’s dumb

I think those are just old leaked rumors that we were discussing before the Kat trade

Yes, Deuce is so similar to Smart that this truly would make no sense unless the coaching staff actually insist to the FO that Smart is some kind of missing piece. Doubt that. Deuce is primed to have a seriously good season. If he improves just a little bit he's going to be very impactful for us.

Re: KAT to Knicks Part 3
Even if Deuce is not an elite distributor, he rarely turns it over. When he's handling PG duties we are very good at maintaining possession. I think he can continue to improve as a distributor, but I'm mostly keyed in on his ability to create with the ball, because he showed signs of being a legit penetrating scorer late in the season.
Any uptick to Deuce's passing game will probably be a result of how efficient a 3 point scorer he becomes and his ability to blow by his defenders. A shooter who can do both well generates more defensive gaps for himself as defenders have to be mindful of their inside/out scoring potential. That results in more dishing opportunities off drives.
If Deuce can combine all three components of efficient 3s, penetration and dishing off drives he will contribute to our spacing when he's on the floor. If he can also become a better conventional distributor, that's great, but it's not necessary for him to be core piece.

That is the most defense you can give KAT if he’s playing the 5. That might be why the Knicks want Smart.

Would be the most defense. Especially when you want to give Brunson rest.

Re: KAT to Knicks Part 3
Do the Knicks even have the ability to trade for Smart right now without involving someone like Hart? If they trade Mitch, Deuce and another small contract to match Smart's $20M+ that would leave them with 10 players under standard contracts with around $4M left under the second apron to get to the minimum of 14 players I believe at the start of the season. I don't fully understand the CBA but I don't think you can sign 4 players at an average of $1M per.
