To be fair, the guy who started the rumor works for Sports Illustrated. It was hard to see his credentials because Twitter has purposefully made it hard to verify who or what is said on the platform. I had to do additional research to see the rumor was from a valid media source. Now is he lying, maybe, but its not a twitter rumor, its a sports illustrated rumor.

As far as Trey Murphy goes, it sounds like the Pelicans are the more aggressive party. I would imagine that Murphy would then slot into PF which then would push OG back to SF and Hart back to the bench (which I think is really more ideal).

As far as roster spots? Yeah Id be looking for vet ring chasers on minimums over no name young guys. Not sure if that becomes a problem under the new apron system (I've heard hints that a vet minimum is not the same as a rookie minimum for that).

I think that’s why we lost Mook. Just when we are about to benefit from ring chasing vets they change the rules. Now that LeBron’s team isn’t a serious contender I guess it’s ok.

There is no way to add Smart in a salary aggregation trade. The only path I see to a Smart trade is part of a larger OG Anunoby trade to break the contract into smaller pieces.

There are enough reports on it to where I felt like it warranted its own thread. Was doing some digging in other existing threads and didn't find any real discussion on it.

Seems like it would take a package of Robinson, McBride, and Dadiet for Smart.

As injury prone as Robinson has been, he is also one of the main reasons we beat the Cavs in 2023 and the Sixers in 2024.

McBride is a less talented Smart, but has a better 3pt shot and is about 7 years younger.

I still don't know if Dadiet has any future at all with the Knicks.

Robinson and Achiuwa is another package option once Achiuwa is allowed to be traded. Two bigs for Smart is a lot to give up too.

I don't see us trade Josh Hart for Smart. I'd be shocked.

I wonder if the goal is to surround Brunson and Towns with the strongest defensive squad possible. Also wondering if Thibs just wants to play 7 guys at 34-35 minutes a piece.

Moving this post to here... Looking past the surface level McBride vs Smart debate...

Why would NY want a $20,210,285 contract on the books? NY could be thinking win now AND the next move ahead. They could be setting us up for a nice upgrade. Remember, you can't aggregate contracts in trades if NY was over the 2nd apron. This is key. Maybe they are concerned they'd go above it by the trade deadline?

Mitch+Deuce ---> Marcus Smart ---> ???

Looking through names who make about that much salary who could be available... Myles Turner stood out to me. He will be an UFA at the end of the year making $19,928,500. Who do you think they would target?

NY could do the same thing with Clint Capella. ($22,265,280)

Smart has 1 more year on his contract than Capella, but his salary goes up a little. Smart would provide more flexibility for a future trade asset.

If we do have a young center lined up (Kessler/Richards) it could be Smart. If we don't then it could be Capella + unknown player with Precious going out.

Just a different way to look at these "rumors." Probably better options to update the roster at 20m or less instead of being capped out at 14m (Mitch) if we go into the 2nd apron.
