I'm sure everyone in the Heat locker room and management knew what happened to Jimmy's dad, but they remained professional and kept moving forward, as true pros do. This organization is exceptional at keeping things under wraps.

Nothing more professional then to rag on your top paid player after the season for not being available enough when knowing that player was being affected by his dad's terminal disease that ended up killing him in the middle of the season. I'd like to think Riley has a little more class than that hence why I feel he may not have known the full situation.

I'm sure Riley was talking about more than just this past season. Games played by Jimmy the last four seasons: 60, 64, 57, 52 (72 game season).

Jimmy has missed over 25% of Heat regular season games during that time.

This situation started before the final's vs Denver, the father was convinced somewhere during the ECF vs Boston so I'd suspect the situation was known for a while before then, may have spanned 2 years before his death and of course after the death probably wasn't much better for months if ever.

Also, once Butler had his meniscus removed in Minnesota (for a quicker return to try to make the playoffs) it was pretty much an expectation that he probably couldn't play a ton of games each season going forward.

I hear ya, but makes sense the Heat would be hesitant to commit super max money to an aging player with those limitations.

Jimmy’s dad didn’t pass away at the beginning of February and Pat still didn’t know anything about it by the exit interviews in May, there’s literally no way he didn’t know. His comments were based on Jimmy’s tenure as a whole.

I’m sure he’ll rip Herro if he’s injured all year again per usual if he hasn’t already

Jimmy’s availability has been a concern beyond just last season. Pat simply called out the obvious reasons, and there’s nothing wrong with that. If Jimmy takes it personally, he’s being too sensitive. But I’m sure he’s fine and ready to play hard this year. Since you’re a former Bulls fan, I get that you might not have seen Riley handle similar situations with LeBron before, this is just business as usual for him.

Oh, there absolutely is something wrong with that. Unless they did ZERO research before trading for him, they knew they were signing a player at age 29 at the time who had his meniscus removed the previous season which would lead to more issues down the road, some medical but more likely, pain management because of the meniscus being removed and now dealing with bone-on-bone contact in the knee.

Why wasn't Butler called out in previous seasons? Butler played less games each of his first 3 years for Miami than the last 2, so now's the time to call him out? I can tell you why, because he got hurt in a play-in game and didn't get to have a chance to make real noise in the playoffs. Who's to say if he pushes himself harder in the regular season or plays more games, he won't be injured by the playoffs by adding more opportunities to be hurt in the regular season (more effort or more overall minutes increases the chances of injury)?

Oh, I have a good grasp of how Riley operates. He ran LeBron off; he pushed the franchise icon in D.Wade (never the highest paid player on the roster in Miami) to go elsewhere and now he's about to push Butler out too. By the way, I've noticed that Riley has made one big acquisition (Butler) since the big 3 broke up, 9 years... Riley's had a roster that was able to get to the finals twice in 5 years because Butler was a better player than he expected and still, couldn't make a move to help this franchise have a better chance at a championship other than overpaying a PG past his prime. Riley's had an incredible career as a coach and as a GM, he's led Miami to multiple championships and put an incredible foundation in place in Miami, but I've not been impressed at all with his player acquisition since LeBron left outside of drafting Bam. After LeBron left, he essentially forced Wade out and then spent years overpaying midlevel players to try to rectify that situation and it's starting to look like he's going to try to do the same thing with Butler. Just very odd to overpay midlevel players and then not possibly overpay (because of age) the most important players to your franchise, Wade should have never been allowed to leave Miami, I was sad to see that happen, glad Kobe stayed in LA his whole career although he didn't get drafted by them.

If you miss the playoffs after missing a chunk of the season and coasting another chunk of the season that you played while making $50M a year you’re likely going to hear about it.

If you get promoted at work and then start half assing your job you’re definitely going to hear from your boss about it. No different than this situation imo and I think it’s being blown up in here much more than it needs to be right now, maybe because there’s been nothing to discuss in here all summer

He didn't ran Lebron off. Wade knees did. Lebron saw the writing on the wall and did what RIley would have done and bailed for a better chance at a ring. Wade was the one, he messed up. He was the key figure in getting 3 rings, we should have sent him off with the Kobe package. It was shameful we didn't. But the Arisons had a part in that decision too, not just Riley. Butler is not in the Wade category where you should pay him whatever at the detriment of the franchise. He's older and getting hurt. It's a bad decision to pay him big money long term. I think it would have been best for both if they parted ways and let Butler go to do a contender that would pay him that money. Father time always win. Betting on Butler for the next 3-4 years is a bad gamble

Wade's knees? He still had Bosh who gave up a lot of his offensive game for the team who could have stepped up to be a high level #2 option, LeBron would have still had at least 1 great talent and whatever they could get from Wade as a 3rd option and who knows, maybe Miami could have still added Dragic that next season to that core.

Yes. Wade knees. Would anyone in a vacuum at that time take uncertainty on Wade production + Bosh over Kyrie & Love ? No one would.
If Lebron was mad about anything FO related it was the cost cutting. Cavs were willing to pay whatever to win, Heat were not. And this was an Arison thing more than Riley thing. But Lebron leaving was more him trying to win more chips and be more likeable again. He's not Kobe, he likes being liked by majority of NBA fans.
Not saying Riley was blameless. There was a lot the FO could have done to make sure the big 3 era was built for the long term. And maybe if the team was set up better he would stayed. But I am not putting personal animosity was a reason Lebron left. He went back to Gilbert whom he hated. It's all business

Yes.
It's all business
i think that the experience of playing with future all stars like norris cole and mario chalmers made the decision (see what i did there) much easy for him to leave. you dont surround top talent with pretty subpar players ...ever

and like it or not cabron was in his prime before he left miami but the whole thing was ill fated anyway since bosh also got sick with the blood clotting issue and wade was losing interest in basketball and was looking to join gaby union in hollywood

How did Heat missed this guy Yuki kawamura? He has great expectations of where his teammates going to be, can read the defense and adjust accordingly.

I remember seeing him in Olympic vs French. I thought he plays great against French and I didn’t think much of it on account of his height.
