Cheryl Reeve's Pop Moment

Post#1 » by Doctor MJ » Fri Oct 11, 2024 3:57 am

1 games into the 2024 Finals, and I can't help but think about the 2014 Spurs and Gregg Popovich.

Seeing the progression of the Lynx this year has me thinking so much of the Spurs' resurgence in the 2010s. Pivot from dynasty where you win a chip every other year with a relatively mild downtime, and then you comeback unexpectedly on the back of a draft steal and updated strategy - and even if the Lynx lose these finals, that'd still just feel like 2013 with 2014 to come.

Pretty crazy the similarities to me, even though I'll acknowledge some clear differences with the most obvious being:

Pop did it with largely the same core.
Reeves is doing it with an entirely new core.

I think of 2014 as the Spurs revenge tour, a team that felt like it SHOULD have won the year before and was on a mission. To me, that narrative fits the Liberty more than the Lynx.

The game 1 Alanna Smith offensive rebound to Courtney Williams for three (plus one), is giving me vibes for the Lynx more like the 2013 Heat.
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Yesterday I was lying; today I'm telling the truth.

Fun fact: both Reeve and Pop were inducted into the HOF at the same time

The comparison to the Spurs dynasty is a good one, but yeah, winning a championship after a complete rebuild would be pretty unique. At this point, maybe it's comparable to what Spoelstra has done with Miami, making it to the finals with a completely different team.

I definitely see that connection, but I see a closer analogy between the Liberty and the Heatles.

I agree with the Pop comp.

But over the years, as people understand the brilliance of Phee, I suspect she'll get a lot of Phil Jackson comps.

Reeve is amazing for so many reasons, but history might just remember that she coached prime Maya and Phee.

Very true but I'll say:

Just like I don't think Cheryl fully understood what to do with the outlier futuristic talent of Maya Moore, neither did Pop fully understand Ginobili. And that's to say nothing of Robinson, Duncan & Kawhi.
