They gave us hawk tuah?
I wouldn't say the Mavs "gave him", Knicks were wheeling and dealing on draft night and of those trades, the Dallas trade made the least amount of sense to me at the time, as they didn't add assets, just cash.
Pick 51: Traded to Dallas for 58 and $1,000,000Dallas wanted a player at 51, so they got that pick, we got their #58 pick and a million bucks. We took Huk at 58.
I think if NY thought Huk was a "must get", they wouldn't have traded back at that point. As the last pick in the draft, essentially every team passed over Huk.
NY did a few interesting things on draft night.
They shed one of their two first rounders, not wanting to add the salary. Actually trading it twice. Pick 24 for pick 26 and 51.
Then trading Pick 26 for like 5 future 2nd rounders.
Their 2nd first rounder was used on a draft and stash player, who decided he didn't want to be stashed, so he came over, but signed for 20% under the standard signing amount.
Then after trying to not pay any first rounders this year on draft day, they traded up to get Kolek, because he was their guy. Trading 3 future 2nds to get Kolek.
After that, they traded back
Pick 38: Traded to OKC for 40 and $500,000
Pick 40: Traded to Phoenix for 51, 56 and 2028 BOS 2nd (Top 45 Protected)
Pick 51: Traded to Dallas for 58 and 1,000,000
So, collectively, pick 38 for picks 56 and 58 and 1.5 million.

Trading out of the first round was to avoid adding unwanted salary going into this year and add future 2nds
Then, trading future 2nds because they wanted Kolek
Then trading back and trading back is interesting. Apparently they saw more value in 2 2nds at the end of the draft than they saw in whoever they could have picked at 38.
