Fairly high expectations for UW-Milwaukee, not so much for Gottlieb's squad

Kinda scummy!

Real scummy when Perk is already a media personality!

Really really scummy considering Perk is a former prep-to-pro!

Extremely wild that ESPN, which employs Perk (!), is reporting this!

First and second round games at Fiserv on March 21 & 23 are on sale now.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Hope everything's OK for Tony. Kinda similar to how Dick stepped away.

If I had to give a completely uneducated guess here, it's one of two things:

1. He's ill/some issues

2. He wants to just do the TV or NBA or pick a job 3 years from now thing because this version of college basketball is not for him...and he waited until this moment so that his lead assistant gets the job - similar to dad

He probably hates NIL as much as K and Saban.

Kind of what my hope is.

The Bennetts mean a ton to me.

He's the embodiment of coaches that don't have a style that fits in such an era (plus the rules changing to favor more offense). He tried, but trying to develop 4 year guys + play a game 100% centered around defense isn't going to work anymore. Or it'll work but not with anywhere near as much consistency.

I can't believe he'd retire suddenly because of NIL. If that was the case, he would have retired months ago or after this coming season. The season is starting in a couple weeks. The roster for this coming season is set.

It must be a personal/health issue, IMO.

Whoa. Hope all's well with Tony and family and this is on his terms and not the result of some secret illness or looming scandal.

Dick stepped away suddenly to give Soderberg an opportunity, just like Bo did with Gard.

This is precisely when he'd retire so that his top assistant gets a shot at the job.

See: His dad and Bo Ryan

He has a quote from last week basically telegraphing that he doesn't like this era and cites Jay Wright, K, Saban.

I don't think anything in college hoop works with much consistency.

I don't dispute that he may have had issues with NIL, just that it wouldn't justify abandoning your team two weeks before the season starts. It seems to me that the issues with NIL would have been evident to him six months ago, at the end of the previous campaign, when it would have made sense to retire and give your program an offseason to reset.

Perhaps he's trying to pull a Dick/Bo to give his assistant the top gig, but I'd also think he's a bit young for that move. Bo Ryan was on his mid 60s when he retired. Dick was pushing 60. It's a bit odd to quit a job for that reason at 55.

I'm sure the story for his retirement will eventually come out sooner rather than later, but I also think what happened at UNLV is going to happen in major college basketball and it's going to be even more disruptive because of how much leverage one player can have. Some kid is going to walk into his coach's office right before the season starts or soon after, and say he's got an offer for more money elsewhere and the team will need to pay up or he walks.

If I were a top college coach today, I would probably be wondering why I'm not coaching in a professional league, since I'm already coaching in a professional league, just the worst one.

Could be absolutely nothing, but I “heard” there was a sudden AD big wig meeting today.

Just saying.
