Backup PG Spot: Devonte Graham
Portland just waived Devonte Graham.
Wouldnt mind him as our backup PG right now. Didnt really watch him for Spurs last year but if he can still hit a 3 why not….figure still more offense than Fultz

He's no point guard.

He's no point guard.
…he definitely is though. 6 foot 1…and when you Google his name it says “American Point Guard”.
Not a traditional pass first point guard, but still a point guard. He was solid for the Hornets 5 years ago (averaged 18 & 7)….was a respectable 3 point threat. Figure too small to be a decent defender but maybe better option than forcing Sasser to be something he’s not.

I just don't understand. The problem we are trying to solve is that we don't have a traditional point guard....so we do that by signing a cast-off non-traditional point guard?

Re: Backup PG Spot: Devonte Graham
Not saying he is the missing piece, but seems like a decent pickup given the slim pickings at the point guard position right now. Would be a minimum deal…if anyone has any better PG ideas, let’s hear them…
Worried if we keep shoe horning Sasser into a PG role that doesn’t fit him he is gonna fizzle out. I want to see him as a combo guard and not have him worry about running an offense…Just get buckets.

Re: Backup PG Spot: Devonte Graham
Not a bad option. He's more of a combo guard rather than a PG but can play spot minutes when needed and has a passable outside shot. He will also understand his role and wont be upset if he plays sporadic minutes when our roster is fully healthy.
If anyone has a superior option that's currently available would love to hear it. And Sasser hasn't yet shown anything to suggest that's him.

Ivey all backup PG minutes
Sign me up any old man PG mentor type to break glass in case of emergency.
I'd sign fultz just for the potential and have our shooting coach live at his Hollands and Ausars house

Combo guard who can't shoot for league average? Don't we have enough of that?

I know us non-piston fans are a long suffering group, but come on. We finally got rid of all the non-NBA players we've had on the roster. The season hasn't even started yet and we've got multiple threads pining to add a guy just cut by one of the couple teams worse than us?

Ivey is the back up PG. If either Cade or Ivey is in foul trouble and we really need the depth, it'll be Sasser.

Fair enough. I see it as unlikely to change any time soon. And I think if we want to get anything out of Ivey as a prospect, it's worth letting it play out a bit and seeing if he's up to the challenge. If not, we should probably be trading him as part of the conversation rather than picking up castoffs.

This isn't about Ivey at all. Give him all the minutes he can handle. It has everything to do with the fact that there will be times both Ivey and Cade share the floor and times both will be off of it. There will also be times one of them doesn't suit up for a game.
In all of these times we will be forced to rely on the pg skills of Sasser who has repeatedly demonstrated that he isn't up for that task. Sasser is a shooting guard in a pg's body. Ben Gordon 0.5.

Re: Backup PG Spot: Devonte Graham
Sure. I'm not against replacing Sasser's very limited role with a vet mentor type. I'm not sure who that is, though. I think while Ivey and Cade are healthy and not in foul trouble, there will be 0 minutes for that position, so it'd have to be a vet who was OK with that.

Re: Backup PG Spot: Devonte Graham
Dennis Smith Jr wouldn't be the worst option. I'd even take a Cory Joseph at this point (don't shoot me).
Worried about over-extending Cade and Ivey -- having Ivey at backup PG seemed like more of the plan when we were unsure if Ivey could shoot well enough to start at SG --- since his shooting stroke is looking great so far, I still think we stagger him and let him play SOME backup PG, but we are one injury away from being in a really bad spot there.

Our team is all young legs. They should be capable of playing big minutes.

Re: Backup PG Spot: Devonte Graham
I'm not high on sasser as a prospect. However, every vet we bring in now needs to be a complimentary piece that helps develop the young guys. That's why we got shooting wings and bball paul to play defense.
And frankly, if ausar ever gets back, I'd rather give him some on the ball reps running pick and roll on the rare nights that both cade and ivey are off the floor for any extended minutes.

Speaking of being listed as a Point Guard, Marcus Sasser himself is listed as a Point Guard. As are many other players who really aren't. It means nothing. Graham is a chucker.
